right now c++ is "the language to know". I don't mind learning languages for no particular reason, but i have 1 goal.

I want to learn and get good with a language that is in-demand. Basically, one that will make getting a job in programming easier.

so, the obvious choice seems to be c++....here is the problem:

c# is rising and may kindof "take over"...and java is a common alternative to c++. would learning c++ be a waste of time? as it is currently, no. but in about 3-6 years, do u think it will be as prominent and in demand?

{i want to be involved in programming/designing stand-alone programs, if that helps at all.}

Well i'm currently in the first year of a Game Development Degree. They are teaching us C++ for the next 4 years. Go with C++ and if you need to, learn C# next. The majority of 3D engines that you may use also are done in C++ such as Irrlicht etc.

Thats my 2 cents at least.

well, i am not quite sure yet. I will be happy programming any kind of software. I mean, I'd rather design and code games than work on the next version of TurboTax, haha....but I am sure I'd be content with most anything.

I guess I'll just learn as much as I can of the most demanded languages. I've got time. 2 1/2 more yrs of highschool and I can learn a language or 2 in college as well.

So far I am settling into C++ fairly well. Thanks for the responses.

So, which languages do you guys prefer? the blitz stuff seems popular around here. must be good for games?

Blitz is popular due to Krylar running BlitzCoder, the christian guys kind of migrated over which was cool. So yeh you do get a lot of Blitz chat around here. I've started to look at it quite a bit recently to prototype games for my course.

Blitzcoder is no longer running, it's been replaced by www.codersworkshop.com . It's not as good imo and is not really Blitz oriented which is a shame.
