I'd like to try another OS besides windows, but I can't seem to let go of it because of the games and other software that rely on it. I came across this Os, www.reactOS.org which is open-source and is compatible with windows applications/drivers. I was wondering, has anyone tried it? |

How would one go about using a third party operating system? |

This looks seriously sweet. I think I want to try this. Questleader, the primary way is that you can download it as an ISO, burn it to a CD, then install it just like you would install Windows XP. You can also use a program called qemu, which is kindof like VirtualPC or VMWare, and you can run another operating system virtually inside a window on your computer. You can use a site like Free OS Zoo to download "images" of installed systems, and then run those images with Qemu. If the second option confused you too much, don't worry about it, the first option is what is most practical. --clint |

No, I think I got it. Hmm... I think I'll just stick with windows. I mean I see no reason to use another OS. |

erm, if it runs windows applications, couldn't it be affected by windows-made viruses? ------------------ |

Not necessarily. It's an OS of its own. It just supports windows applications and drivers. Main reason for switching is because the pcs we bought that have windows, didn't come with the windows cd when we got it. One of our comps died, so we can't re-install windows. We had some bad experiences with windows as well. Seeing how linux is very good because it's open source. I was going to get that, but I couldn't afford to sacrifice the applications and drivers that windows was able to use, sounded complicated to get it setup too. |

Well some linux distros are harder to get working than others. I'm currently using kubuntu and all drivers are installed from printer to graphics card. But of course it's not quaranteed that it can be setup on your machine without proplems. ------------------ string LordAndSaviour() { return "Jesus Christ"; } // [VoHW] |

Haven't yet. Waiting to get an external DVD burner that's on sale at BestBuy to burn off work/applications and such. Just incase something does go wrong. Then I would have to partition my Hard drive. By the way, do you know of any free partition softwares? Or would I be able to partition my harddrive with the trial version of Partition Magic? |

when u run the install, it should ask u which partition to install on. If there isnt one, it should ask if you'd like to make one. then its all up to you. thats how it works when installing windows anyway who knows how it will work when installing ReactOS ------------------ |

you can download (about 15 or 17 megs only) a version of reactos inside quemu that you can just run as if another application, sure its slow that way, but it allows you to mess around with it safely with no effort ------------------ |

i just installed it side to side with my Windows ME and my other computer. Guess what I found out, It doesn't support USB mouses. So I haven't really installed any Windows programs on it yet, it seems empty though.... ------------------ |
