Does anyone know how I would set up my own domain? I don;t mean register one for a website but set up an extension like.info? Linux comes with all of the DNS services and such but I'm not sure. Would I have to contact my ISP or something? ------------------ |

If you're going to be setting up your own domain name, you do need to register with an accredited registrar - no way around it, that's how the Internet is set up. I suggest GoDaddy. You misunderstand what a DNS server does anyways: It caches the DNS entries so a large network doesn't have to reach across the Internet to get domain name information - its mere existence will not put your domain name on the Internet. Your domain name is actually stored on root servers, and filters down to other DNS servers - since you do not control the root servers, you cannot willy-nilly set up your own name without permission. You can set up your own DNS server if you want, but that's usually not neccessary, and it doesn't negate the need to get registered with an accredited registrar, so your name can be put onto the root servers. Setting up your own DNS server is quite unneccessary, unless you're setting up something like a corporate-size network. Usually the DNS servers of the registrar and your ISP are more than up to the task. ------------------ |

"Hey Cobra! Welcome back to the forum!" Thanks. I've been sorta on and off depending on how much free time I've got. I still lurk around sometimes. "but what I'm looking to do is create my own domain extension -.fom- and sell it out." You can't. The Internet Assigned Numbers Authority (IANA) controls the top-level domains such as .com, .org, .edu, .mil, etc. Only they can create new top-level domains. ------------------ |

Would I be able to create a name server for my computer? So I would be able to telnet to it from somewhere else? Would that cost money? ------------------ |
