"In her new book, journalist Pamela Paul sets out to scare readers about the
effects of pornography on American society, and she succeeds mightily. Her
weapon of choice is statistics. For instance:
The adult film industry produces 11,000 films a year.
Americans rent more than 800 million pornographic videos and DVDs each
year, which accounts for about one in five of all rented movies.
In California alone, pornographic materials bring in $9 billion to $14
billion a year.
Some 260 million pages of pornography are available on the Internet.
Pornographic sites are visited three times more often than Google, Yahoo!
and MSN Search combined.

Paul, a contributor to Time magazine, claims that many people eager to
defend their right to erotica don't understand just what's out there or how
the plethora of pornography is affecting our society. She writes of a
recently issued movie, made in America, that shows male actors costumed as
Arabs taking sexual revenge for the abuses at Abu Ghraib Prison on female
actors dressed as soldiers.

She writes of 14-year-olds making pornographic videos and setting up
pornographic Web sites. And she writes that the days of a 10-year-old boy
finding a copy of Playboy in his parents' bedroom are long over: Today,
that youngster's first experience with pornography well may be watching
extreme sex acts on the family's computer.

Pornography also is changing relationships. Paul reports that older men lie
about their "hobby," spending hours "catching up on work" on home
computers. Many younger men watch porn on their office computers all day.
As a result, men of all ages increasingly are dissatisfied with their sex
lives, claiming that spouses or partners fail to exhibit the same
enthusiasm for sex in general and for sexual experimentation as the women
in the pornographic movies.

"Real sex has lost its magic," a 28-year-old man told Paul. A 34-year-old
man who has been divorced three times added, "I've broken up with women who
wouldn't perform certain things I've seen in adult films."

Paul's research also indicates that men who start with soft-core, "vanilla"
pornography usually move on to more violent and debasing images and videos.
Paul reports that 25 percent of pornographic magazines, 27 percent of
videos and 42 percent of Internet sites depict some form of violence
against women, "ranging from verbal aggression to torture and mutilation."

"Seeing women demeaned is somehow a turn-on," says a 21-year-old man who
insists that his tastes in pornography do not correspond to "how I am with
an actual woman."

Paul knows that her call for a fresh look at the dangers of something most
people take for granted won't be popular. Pornography, she writes, is "a
kind of male utopia that men are keen to protect." Nonetheless, Paul calls
for a "censure-not-censor" solution. "Americans need to be informed about
pornography's negative impact - about how its unabashed acceptance is not a
step forward for women, nor a harmless diversion for men, nor a step toward
a more open and liberalized society," she writes. Whether or not her call
is heeded, Paul's thought-provoking arguments may cause those who think the
right to view pornography is completely defensible to think again."

So since it says soft porn is bad would topless dancers be also in that catagory? One topless dancer which she says was christian said she does not think what she is doing is bad but she goes to church every week to repent so that she can make sure it is not bad since she is always firgiven which helps her go back to work. lol

This is more serious than people think. I would say more important than Osama. These are lies spread in society and a lie can and have caused more devastation than terrorists.

If people only focus on one problem we will ignore the other problems. It would be like putting a wall in front of us to not get wet form a flood but the water will come from the sides and be hind.

People treat each other like objects and objects like people. Animals act more civil than people at times. I guess people are proud to be lower than animals and will pay top dollar for it.

I hope this doesn’t bring a back lash to have the other side be extreme again and have another Catholic inquisition.

Yep, the day a Playboy boards a plane and crashes it into an office building, I'll be worried.

I don't care either way about porn, but prostitution, drugs, gangs, etc. are a lot more dangerous to society.

1. pray, not just for the world in general, but for specific people. god already knows these things so it is not letting down a friend by telling god about it.

2. you should not persoanally look at it... there goes at least the christian population.

3. Talk to the people you know about the issues. make all these statistics known.

4. (kinda an add to 3) Tell your friends that nothing is acually secret. as you know, these sites save information about you, your internet history is saves even after you "delete" it. All these things can be found out by:
parents
spouse
family
friends
ect.
many people dont really care about that, but then again, many do.

5. protect yourself from slipping even a little bit, do not go to sites that may be sponsered by porn sites, spend as little time alone on the web if you do have problems.

also, the prophet of my church (gordon b. hinkley (mormon)) has lately been talking a lot about this issue and how it tears apart the most basic unit of humankind, the family. It tears apart relationships, and as was said before, it can make you expect more of your partner. He brought up one time that the porn industry makes more money that :fox news, cbs, and nbc combined.

so pretty much, watch out for porn, it is bad, it messes with everything that is good, and definately is sinful.

Can you show me scripture to back this up? In the Bible all of God's promises are conditional, they all have an IF. In the bible the word believe means commit. So to believe in Christ means that you must commit your life to Him, not to only believe in His existence. Here is a scripture that I'd like you to read, I'd like for you to tell me what you think it means:

works (as specified in james 2 17-18 "even so faith, if it hath not works is dead, beind alone. 18. yea, a man may say, thou hast faith and i have works: shew me thy faith without thy works, and i will shew you my faith by my works")

so pretty much to be a christian, you need to believe in the doctrine, bet being that faith without works is dead, then you must also do the works to be a true christian. and porn would definately not fall into the "works" culumn
