I just thought... Realm and other newbie programmers (no offense I'm one too still) could use a mentor. I hooked up with graynod and he's been a great help... so here's my suggestion.. those who are experienced programmers (your definition of expereinced) could post your languages and skills and the newbie's could hook up with you (after a PM or two).

You experienced programmers don't have to be full time mentors, graynod would reply to one or two questions I had and let me know what was going on in his programming life... like right now he's working at VCU on a geneteics algorithim.

Waddya think? Does this idea suck?

Hrm, interesting idea.

I like the sound of it, and I may be interested in either being a mentor, or being a mentee.

I've been programming for around 16 years, and have experience in most C-ish languages (C/C++/C#/Delphi/Pascal), as well as a little Assembler and other things.

One of my large interests is using computing in missions, and for the past 2 1/2 years I've been at a missions group as a computer programmer.

I'm interested in becoming a better software engineer (how to design better systems), and how to really reach the full potential that God has blessed me with.

gaa!

yes, i would LOVE a mentor, it would help a whole lot! but they'd have to wait untill i fix my current comptuer, or i buy a new one.

which comptuer is a good computer for programming, and what are some good 3d graphics cards? (I need a graphics card either way...)

HAHA RM!
by the time you start to build your new compy, a new graphics card will be top dog. ITs sick how fast new ones come out. Either way, i recommend one of the newer incarnations of the ATI Radeon series. (some people say nVidia, but eh, its one of those "vs." things.)
i will be building a new computer this......january i believe.

I just got an ATI Radeon 9250, and it work's great. I heard NiVidia are the best, but at the same time they are the most expensive. But if you buy a new computer but want good graphics, don't get a computer with an intergrated video card (Intel), buy a 3rd party graphics card yourself, or just get a computer that comes with a 3rd party graphics card.

I am well versed in C++/C#. I have also used Java, COBOL, Assembler, and CICS. If you don't want to learn a language for mainframes then exclude COBOL and CICS from that list.

I would challenge even the newer programmers to start teaching other people. By teaching others you actually learn more yourself! This is a great idea CPUFreak!

I could use a Java mentor... could i hook up with you HeardTheWord? Graynod isn't to keen on java and I need to learn java for an AP course...

Thanks

Oh BTW my email is cpu.crazy with the @ symbol then the text gmail.com

Realm, get a Radeon Xstasy 9500 (or higher) they're fairly inexpenive. Also get an AMD CPU and posibly a MSI motherboard (they're good too).

Here's some links:
www.newgg.com
www.tigerdirect.com
www.pcdirect.com
www.pricewatch.com

if you can't get your comp working... (if you do at least get XP on it!!!!)
Also get a dvd burner and a spindle of 4.7 GB dvds to back up your programs.

lava, about nVidia being better than ATI, its one of those "things".
like linux and microsfot (or mac).
also, why did you buy a Radeon 9250s? thats.....old. if it was the cash you had in mind, i woulda gone with eBaying it, despite the obvious dangers there.

Yes it was cash reasons, I didn't really care about if it was new or old, I just wanted a cheap card that did the job, though my dad using eBay alot, I still wanted to be safe when buying computer hardware. Even if NiVidia isn't or is better, they are more expensive than ATI's cards.

Oh here's another tip:

Mentees:
Get to know your mentor (if you haven't already)
Ask him/her questions but don't bombard (unless he/she likes that stuff)
Try to think a little like your mentor. And have fun with him/her!

Mentors:
be kind to your mentees, most likely they're new at programming or at this language. Don't get irritated. Try to have fun with your mentees.

en972, try not to be so judgemental, lol.
and, honestly, few say "elite" or "leet" anymore outside of sarcasm.
i think "rating" fellow programmers in a such a lame and tired way should be avoided, but as usual im just being over-opinionated.

"bwoked" I like that

Well I think someone's skill should be determined by how much they have learned and someone's experience. My advice to you RM is to get something done concerning games or programming, just keep making little games, get your mind working, even join teams making games that need help where you can offer some talent of yours, or work alongside other programmers, you could learn alot if you help make a game. Just get something done, even if you have to use an easier language, just make something, little games, demos, graphical demos, think of something "what is my weakness in C++?" then experiment and make game that will stengthen, like say you were never good at making a quest system, then make a game that takes full advantage of it, that's what I am doing, anything to get some experience, even if you just release the source code, practice making games. Someone cannot draw, program, model, paint, sing, dance, and act without practice.

Beginner/Newbie name sticks for a while... Larvae Stage is like you can only print x + 1 and stuff. Newbies will still have problems that elites have overcome and know how to overcome. Newbies (like me fora long time) can also have toruble understanding OOP.

Ok I won't judge you, I think you're a newbie (you gotta program for about a year or more most say) and there's nothing wrong with that either.

By the way, I failed to mention that I know a bit about networking and Win32 programming in C++. In case anyone is looking at either of those.
