My freshman year of college, my dad called me up to tell me that my hard-drive at home had crashed, and the capstone work of my high-school programming days was lost in its entirety. I was literally sick to my stomache, and couldn't believe it was all gone. My advice: play it cool, don't do anything rash. My first advice would be to grab a USB key or something and use that to grab all of you data off of your computer (you should be able to do that while in safe mode). The other thing I would do is take out the hard-drive and put it into another computer as a slave drive, and copy off all of my important data before trying a reinstall or anything drastic like that. Installing a new OS is a last restort, though $800 for data recovery from CompUSA is a little steep. :-\ I'd be willing to call you and give you phone tech support to walk you through some of the finer points of this stuff if you're interested -- my cell gets free long distance. --clint ------------------ |

OK firemaker.... I've been thinking veeery deeply and I remembered a solution for a problem similar to this that I fixed.... First off you need the Windows ME disk Now this is from and XP disk... so it may not work. Oh one more thing.. ur gonna need to reinstall some drivers and possibly some other programs but Your files will still be there though. You could have Windows create a new C:\Windows folder so that your drivers aren't overwriten (say the comp will boot off of C:\Windows2)... if this works please email me @ cpu[dot]crazy[at]gmail[dot]com so that I can see if you can copy some drivers over without wreking your installation like it is now. ------------------ [This message has been edited by CPUFreak91 (edited September 03, 2005).] |

Alright I'll break it down the way I fixed my comp when it did that. Originally it turned out to be a corrupt mcafee scan at startup that'd freeze during start. So basically I got into ms-dos and hit whatever key brings up the startup menu. (Mine was CTRL I've read F8 is working for you). Once there I selected the option where you can select which drivers and whatnot to start your computer with. Now the first time through with this you'll want to select no for all options (which is basically identical to a safe mode startup). If it starts up fine you know that one of the files that usually starts up your computer is corrupt. Basically run through a series of restarts selecting 1 at a time and keep booting until you find the 1 that freezes the boot. That's how I did mine. It was a LONG time ago so I'm sort of sketchy on the details. Roughly it works along the lines of MSConfig. I could help you out more with suspicious/unsuspicious startup files if you're on 98. Otherwise I'm quite lost. ------------------ |

As others have pointed it sounds like you should be able to recover your data no problem. If you have important data you buy an external storage device (HD, flash mem, zip) and get in the habit of making backups every so often. |

It can be I've had a lots of computer probs this weekend. I got given a pretty decent laptop, the cdrom drive doesn't work, the floppy drive doesn't work it just had a copy of Windows XP on it. So i downloaded WINGRUB and then pointed it to the initrd and linux kernel file and booted into a SUSE FTP install. I wasn't counting on it being a little shaky at best, so i set it all uo, chose my mirror and started the installation, mid way through it decides that it no longer wants to see the mirror and freezes. I have no choice but to reboot. The partitions are mashed so there isn't anything on the HD, so i'm left with a nothing other then a challenge i've just plugged a spare laptop FDD in and have the wire hanging out atm but it seems to be ok. Just need to get me a nice floppy based distro Fun and games... --D-SIPL ------------------

all of today was like that for me...swapping floppy drives, hard drives, cd drives...hanging out or sitting on top of the case when they weren't in the original case.all trying to get windows 95 to install. i almost had it until the 486 i was attempting to install it one froze...i wish i had the floppy disk installation, then i wouldn't have to have to mess with starting it from windows 3.1. linux isn't even this difficult for me to install...well on a desktop, and installing one of the beginner distros...plug n play and easy installations are not over-rated. i feel for the computer repair guys from the days old . ------------------ proverbs 25:7 www.gfa.org - Gospel for Asia www.persecution.com - Voice of the Martyrs |
