has anyone here checked out the info on windows latest os, due in '06? here's the address:

http://www.microsoft.com/windowsvista/default.mspx

i'd just add the link but i'm still not sure how to link on this. i couldn't find a screen shot of somesort, i'm curious to see what it is going to look like. it sounds interesting with the new disk imaging thing they got going on. just curious what all y'all expert opinions on it was? i'm thinking i'll be sticking with xp til about 2008, to see how "secure" vista is going to be, and to see if it's actually worth buying. anyway, just thought i'd post something on it, since no one else has yet.

i like longhorn better, vista sounds to much like a credit card or part of a fancy house...if it's as much of an improvement to xp as xp was to the 9x serious than it should be great. hopefully it won't be another millenium addition.

Yah I'd stick with XP. XP will soon be like Windows 2000 is now so when all the software is being made for vista, that's the time to switch to... LINUX!!! No seriously, that would be the perfect time to switch. You will get it cheaper (a service pack should be out so buy Vista with the old service pack).

They're not full screens, but parts of it appear here:
http://msdn.microsoft.com/windowsvista/

It also sounds like the themes will be more flexible, and I hope they include tools to create and install new themes easily. Such stuff is lacking in XP.

It also sounds like it may ask the user what to do if it needs higher privileges (such as when installing something). Sounds much better than the current default of silently rejecting the request for higher privileges, which makes installing apps more difficult because we currently have to log off and re-login as admin, then log off again and re-login as the user. Doing anything that requires Admin privileges is currently a lengthly process.

Looks good. I dunno if I'll actually get it, as I'm considering Linux, but it'll be a minor improvement for those who decide to get it.

Let him declare and lay out before me
what has happened since I established my ancient people,
and what is yet to come—
yes, let him foretell what will come.

8 Do not tremble, do not be afraid.
Did I not proclaim this and foretell it long ago?

Is it that time already? Microsoft releasing another version of their operating system *sigh*. Just checked out the features, nothing that makes me go wow.

If you are considering moving from windows to linux, i would suggest not using any of the "trendy" distro's. Get to know how to use linux first, otherwise you will just get frustrated and miss out on the functionality of the console There is so much power under-the-hood

I suggest using Fluxbox as your window manager as well :P

Because of its lack of File Manager. It encourages the hands-on-imperative and in a nice way. It's got good functionality, is small and does exactly what i need from a window manager without the bloat.

Interesting - it's got that sidebar again. Correct me if I'm wrong, but haven't they had something like that since they created Active Desktop? Probably another thing I'll turn off after playing with it for an hour.

Vista definition:

1.A distant view or prospect, especially one seen through an opening, as between rows of buildings or trees.

2.An avenue or other passage affording such a view.

3.An awareness of a range of time, events, or subjects; a broad mental view: “the deep and sweeping vistas these pioneering critics opened up”

Longhorn:

1.Any of a breed of cattle with long horns, formerly bred in great numbers in the southwest United States.

2.A variety of Cheddar cheese molded into a long cylinder.
