Hello everyone.

My name's yayyak (or Jack Scott if you prefer). I've just become a Christian (a few weeks ago on sunday). Scary experience. I've looked through all the evidence for and against christ, and I've decided he was one cool guy (to say the very least)! I don't know very much about anything really, but I'm learning.

Luckily I've had some support over the last few weeks from my girlfriend (who's an anglican). She has been explaining a lot of things to me. I am so very lucky to have her. She's not a coder, but you cant ask for everything :P. So onto coding:

I learned to code around the late nineties using QBasic (on my dad's old 486), but after quickly seeing its disadvantages, I moved over to BlitzBasic, which I became quite good at, but after the move to BlitzMax (which I couldn't afford) and Codersworkshop, I decided it was time to move on as well, and now I program in C (because Linux can't run the Blitz compiler). I like coding games (2D stuff mostly) and OS development, but currently I haven't done much for ages.

Some of you may have seen me around on the web, as I used to frequent the old Blitzcoder forums, and I visit Codersworkshop.com occasionally as well. Heres hoping I make less of a fool of myself here than I did there :P.

Apart from all of the above information, heres more about me: I like watching cricket, playing canoe polo, and the school holidays. I am also 16 years old.

So I now enter the most confusing period of my life (so far at least). I believe in something I know hardly anything about and I haven't laid finger to keyboard in weeks (quite possibly months). I plan to fix both these things.

*starts grinning* It's good to get all this off my chest. If you've got to here, thanks for listening.

Hello yayyak. Welcome to the forums!
It's great to hear that you have found Christ. He sure is the coolest.

It's understandable if you are confused right now but if you keep God in your mind and learn He's commands I'm sure he will answer your questions and reveal He's holiness to you and live in you.

So, you are interested in pc games, what's your favorite game genre?

God bless you.

- Brother in Christ,
Jari.

Welcome to the boards!

Very happy to see that you found us here, and much happier to hear that you found Christ. He's our only hope of salvation.

So you like doing OS development on Linux? Sweet! I'm very new to Linux myself, but am learning fast.

Welcome!

Thanks for the welcome guys, glad to be here.
I guess I will be less confused over time, as I figure out what God wants me to do.

Yes, I was on the old blitzcoder forums quite a bit.

And OS development on Linux is great. I will never go back to Windows.

Thanks all.

So what kind of OS development do you do on Linux?

You making a distro, or kernel hacking? It's nice to see more Linux users coming on here.

I joined today. Run Fedora Core 3 at home. Have run Suse and Ubuntu as well. Close to 40 years of age. Been a Christian for 6 1/2 years. Work in the airline industry and code in C++ in my spare time.

Spare time I play FPS (Counter strike) and on warm days, I climb onto my bike and cruise the highway. I am single and not looking for a partner. I belong to JESUS and that is the most important thing in my life.

Job second

Hi yayak! Welcome to the club (CCN) and the family (as all us Christians are, in a matter of

speaking).

Woo! More Linux users! I used to use Windows only for my games, music, videos and DVD's

because my sound in KDE 3.2 was horrible! Now that I've switched to Fluxbox 1.14 I find the

my sound is perfect. So now I only use windows for my Games.

Hi dmitri. You say you use ubuntu? I'm planning on getting it soon. What's it like? (When

you've got time you can email me the answer if you want).

Hi MySQL. How long have you been coding?

Hi. I loved Ubuntu. It had the 2.6.10 kernel and was very stable. I switched to Fedora because of the extended packages. With Ubuntu you get a full OS on the CD but with FC3 yuo get 4 CD's. If the new Ubuntu release scheduled for October is as good as they say it is, I might even switch back.

I use Gnome and the moment and when I feel that way inclined I will use Fluxbox. I used to use window manager but I got bored with it. Gnome is (in my opinion better than KDE), but I am not propogating a war here It is just a personal point of view.

Are there any other C++ coders here as I would like to know how they code on Linux.

I write all my source code in Emacs and compile from there. If there are any other C++ folks here, drop me a line and tell me your way of doing things. I have no formal training in coding. I learn by buying books and doing it from there, so any professional folks here with input would be appreciated.

I did VB6 when I only had winXP on my box, but I got bored with that. I have been using Linux now for about 3 years and I only use my windows box for counter strike (FPS).

Chat again soon.

Basically I do the same thing for C++ on Linux -- except I use vi exclusively.

I've also done some messing with Borland's Kylix, but it was a pain to get running on Fedora Core 3, and after I had fought with that enough, I decided to switch to something better, so now I compile with Mono in C#. I use Monodevelop as my IDE, GTK# as my toolkit, and Glade as my forms designer.

Glad to see you here!

I try not to code in C++. I only code in C, which is a much cleaner language.

With C coding (which is essentially the same as C++) I write my code either in KWrite or Nano, depending on how geeky I feel, and then compile with GCC and LD. Sometimes I through in some NASM and MAKE for good effect.

Still thanking all for the welcome. I feel wanted .

I just started using linux recently (mandrake,KDE) and coding using KDevelop. It's the only development environment I have used so far and I like it. I'm now trying to code more c++ in linux but unfortunately windows seems to be better option for large projects just because there is no incremental linker in my linux box.

what's the difference between kde, gnome, and fluxbox? and for that matter, what is fluxbox?

KDE and GNOME are popular windows managers for the X Windows system. In linux, if you don't have X installed you have only ms-dos style prompts. If you have just X installed and no window manager, then you can use your mouse and see graphical stuff but it's very primitive, if you will. KDE and GNOME are the popular X Windows enhancers. THey have the equivalent of a start menu and their own Microsoft Office style Office suites, email clients, notepad-like editors, programming ide's and much more. FLux box is a windows manager though not as fancy. I just take to it more.

I also use kde components in flux box. For instance, I use KDE's Microsoft Exlporer equivalent for file browsing through Fluxbox.

Does that answer and questions? It was a quickly thrown to-gether explanation.

i knew they were all windows managers. yeah, you answered my questions for the most part. i looked up fluxbox, and seen some screen shots from different people. it reminds me(not so much looks, but ummm...style/motives behind it) of ...man...i can't think of it, but it's the mod thing for windows...it replaces explorer, the desktop and everything...gosh...i use to use it all the time until their site went down...i'll look it up after i finish this post. i have to get linux set back up on my computer, i'm missin' out on all the fun of open source !

* litestep *
...that's the name! it's one big downfall was the lack of ability to manage/change icons and anything on your desktop.

Yes Opensource is very fun because you can edit it to your style....
Even more offtopic: I went to linuxfromscratch.org and I decided that I'll try making Jinux (Joe's Linux)... see how hard it is.

I've done LFS and BLFS quite a few times, you need to know your pc inside out otjerwise your compile options will be lame. You will run into loads of problems so stick close to the irc channel.

it will take you a few weeks to get a really well working system, with x, updated all of the packages because they are out of date (LFS 6.1 is dated January i think).

Anyways once you have done your LFS box make sure you tar your root directory and also the package source directory in a seperate tar file (save you downloading it all again).

best of luck. If you get stuck give me a shout!

Ahhh. Soap. I use regular Dawn. Smells like most regualr soap in the US (and out of it). But my deoderant is stronger than soap. So I smell of classic/original Axe. (Not the spray. Just stick).
