Hello,

I have been working on a project called "Exodus" for the past year. The goal is to make a strategy game/simulator of the Exodus of the Israelites. It is a fairly ambitious project, but with the Lord's help, it can be completed. Once complete, we were going to distribute it for free (it is a complete non-commercial project) to everyone who could benefit from playing it. Development was good last summer, but it has slowed down because all of the team members are in college and work part time. We are almost done with the planning, but we already have a large part of the foundation classes finished.

The main point of this post is to ask for your opinion on what the game should be called. "Exodus" is the best name for the main title, but subtitles vary. You can learn a little about Exodus at the 3D7 Software site, http://3d7software.org/exodus/index.php. (The site is under heavy development.)

Here is a list of possibilities:
>>> What are your five choices for most desirable titles in order from best to worst?

Exodus: Freedom from Sin
Exodus: The Providence of God
Exodus: Divine Providence and Will
Exodus: The Providence and Will of God
Exodus: Divine Justice and Love
Exodus: Providence and Justice
Exodus: Freedom and Bondage
Exodus: Liberty, Bondage, and Love
Exodus: God Provides Hope
Exodus: Hope from Above
Exodus: Providence and Hope from Above
Exodus: Revelation of Divine Will
Exodus: Consequences and Love
Exodus: Sanctification of a Nation
Exodus: Trek to the Promised Land
Exodus: Flight to Freedom
Exodus: Flight from Sin
Exodus: Miraculous Journey
Exodus: The Journey of the Israelites
Exodus: Desert Voyage

Exodus: <Your Own Suggestion>

Not Available:
Exodus: Journey to the Promised Land - http://www.wisdomtreegames.com/exodus/ (The Exodus we are making is much different from this 1991/1993 game.)
Exodus: A New Beginning - http://www.netexo.com/
Exodus: Journey to Freedom - http://gbgm-umc.org/umw/exodus/

The title should be significant and meaningful, but it should also be something that would not cause a non-Christian to reject upon first glance. (If we hand out copies on a CD, we hope that the person will at least insert the disk and install it rather than trashing it because of preconceived notions about the title.)

Also, I am wondering if you would be willing to help with project in any way. We have two programmers, some people who may contribute a little, and God. If we could have an artist for small 32x32 pixel characters (with eight 3D rotations), that would be great. We are using Blender 3D (http://www.blender3d.org/) to make the 3D graphics. It is an isometric game, so it may be possible to record actors on a blue screen rather than modeling them in 3D. A full job listing can be found at http://3d7software.org/personnel/availablejobs.php

Thank you very much,

Bradley Tetzlaff

Hey!

That sounds like an awesome project you've got going there. These are the subtitles that I like:

Exodus: Flight to Freedom
Exodus: Miraculous Journey
Exodus: The Journey of the Israelites
Exodus: Hope from Above
Exodus: Trek to the Promised Land

I'd suggest also something like:
The Exodus
Exodus: Advent of Righteousness

It looks like you have some nice things going. I'm checking the site out right now, and am quite impressed!

i would go with "Exodus: Flight to Freedom" . it sounds good, and a non-Christian prob'ly wouldn't throw it away. but if you slap God, Miracle, Salvation, and very Christian words in there they would prob'ly reject it...at least i would if i were lost, especially if i were backslidden. but that's just my opinion. good luck with the game.

Hi. You project sounds nice. I have also thought about making a game about the exodus but not sure what is proper way to do it.

Can you tell us more about what kind of strategy game it will be?
Will you make it open source as well?

Here's my top five names for the game:
Exodus: Trek to the Promised Land
Exodus: The Providence of God
Exodus: Hope from Above
Exodus: The Journey of the Israelites
Exodus: Sanctification of a Nation

Some suggestions:
Exodus: Redeem of obeisance
Exodus: The new law
Exodus: Reward of the faithfull
Exodus: Servants of Lord
Exodus: Light in the dark
Exodus: Divine path
Exodus: Return to eden
Exodus: Liberation of the chosen

I hope some of them makes sense...

Howdy!

Have you settled on a game engine yet for this game? I'm just curious.

We came up with a couple that we thought might be more acceptable to a secular audience:

1) Exodus: The Finger of God
2) Exodus: Slaves No More
3) Exodus: Chosen Nation
4) Exodus: Twelve Tribes
5) Exodus: Flight to Freedom

Here are some from the "rejects" list:
1) Exodus: Man(na) Live
2) Ex o' Duss: Her side of the story.
3) Sinai Trek: The Next Generation (you know, after Joshua takes over)

Looks great so far! We look forward to seeing more of this!

In Christ,
clint and jennifer

Jari and others,

I thank you very much for your suggestions on an Exodus subtitle. That information is very useful. Exodus is going to be a tactical strategy game where the player has a bird's-eye view of the map. If you have played the first versions of Command & Conquer, Dark Reign, Warcraft, Starcraft, etc. then you know exactly what type of game it will be. However, it is missing a major features of these games: the ability to construct things. Construction abilities only show up when the Tabernacle is built. (The Tabernacle parts will be immobile characters that can be picked up.) Battles are done in realtime.
Exodus does include some features from other genres: There is a complex scripting system (we decided to use DLL scripts) that can control cutscenes. Cutcenes are not videos in this case, but rather are scripted AI actions within the game. There is also dialogue and inventory. The character actions are wider in range than in the strategy games I mentioned: pray, pick up, drop, talk, follow other character, saw wood, sacrifice, hide, etc. People can do more than just fight.
We also plan to make it educational by including a few questions in each mission. The multi-page briefings will include apologetics in the form of questions and answers (we definitely need this to explain the Exodus in light of the New Testament). They will also have a description of the situation and the Bible verses that match.

In terms of technical details, it is progammed in C++ using Win32 and DirectX. We use Visual Studio .NET to develop it. This is not platform-independent, but I enjoy programming so I would not mind changing a few functions for it to operate on other platforms. We have a very general API written that abstracts the platform-dependent code and therefore it will be easier to port if necessary.

We might make it open source. I will need to write more code before I decide on that. Once we finish the engine for it, then I will probably make the code available. The other programmer and I were thinking of finishing our part (the progamming) and then allowing some other people to put all of the content into it. If all goes well, I hope to make a sequel that is about Paul's missionary journeys using the same game engine.

May God bless you,

Brad

hey, this looks pretty cool. best of luck to you!

the only one on the list I liked ( I mean no offense, just my personal preference) is a modification of "Exodus: Sanctification of a Nation"....

"Exodus: Sanctification"

my reasoning: I think a title of a game should have some mystery behind it.
gathers more interest.

i like arch's idea of making it more of a mystery. i'd be interested in playing the game your making, and the sequel you talked about.

Why not just Exodus?

Mack,

It cannot be just "Exodus" because of possible copyright issues and other legal issues. It should have a more unique name to avoid any possible legal problems. It is not too hard to choose a subtitle, so it might as well have one. I think there will be a final decision soon after I talk with a few more people.

I thank you for the suggestion,

Brad

I thank all of you who have voted. I have narrowed it down to two choices. Which one of these do you think is best?:

1. Exodus: Flight to Freedom
2. Exodus: The Path of Promise

Thank you,

Brad

Exodus: The Path of Promise

Flight does not sound the way it went, in my opinion.

I thank you all for participating in the poll. I now have more votes for "Exodus: The Path of Promise" after giving many voters a choice between that and "Exodus: Flight to Freedom." "Exodus: Flight to Freedom" did come in second.

I think that "Exodus: The Path of Promise" should be a fine subtitle. It should be meaningful enough without causing non-Christians to reject it right away. Thank you, coolj, for suggesting it. There were many other good suggestions for a subtitle too, but there can only be one. Feel free to make other suggestions if you really do not like this subtitle.

Thanks,

Brad

Of course, I like it too
check out 1 Kings 8:56

Off topic- if you decide to have a narrator, my pick would be Caleb.
see Joshua 14:5-15

Good luck!
