ok...after installing linux mandrake...and having to reinstall windows, and generally giving myself a hard time, i need to change my boot.ini file, and i was wonderin how to do this? i've went under administrator in safe mode and changed it before, but now it says the file is read only. what i need to change is this...i have 2 versions of windows it says i can boot up, but only one of them is actually there, and i need to take the extra version off, or at least set the running option as default...any help would be appreciated...i've even thought of downloading knoppix or phlack just to boot into them and then change the boot.ini file from there...but i'm sure there's a less complicated way to do this. ------------------ www.gfa.org - Gospel for Asia www.persecution.com - Voice of the Martyrs |

An Easy way to do this, Option 1) or If you have Windows XP CD Put the CD in, Restart the Computer and when it says Press Any Key to Boot from CD, Boot from the CD. once it loads the setup on the first screen, press R to Enter Recovery Console. Once into recovery console use the command "bootcfg /rebuild" without the quotations and it will rebuild you boot.ini file (just follow the onscreen steps at that point) then type Exit to restart the computer. Wow, I tried to install mandrake and I lost the hal.dll file, then cause my docs were encrypted (by windows) I couldn't get to my files! I did learn that I might have been able to get them by copying an pasting from linux (slackware), but I learn that after reinstalling windows. So I now do not like mandrake ------------------ |

the first time i tried to install linux it was mandrake, and it worked fine, other than somehow i(it was MY fault) i managed to ruin the hard drive . the most success i've had is with redhat. i've tried fedora but it simply won't boot the installer(???). ------------------ www.gfa.org - Gospel for Asia www.persecution.com - Voice of the Martyrs |

Hal.dll can be fixed by doing a "Repair installation" of windows or expanding the hal.dll from the Recovery Console the HAL (Hardware Abstraction Layer) is a virtual representation of the physical hardware. Each Hal.dll will vary from computer to computer depending on the hardware installed. If this file goes missing, using the Windows Generic Hal will boot back into windows though some hardware will not function properly, but after a functional reboot it will rebuilt a valid hal.dll file Just a tidbit of knowledge -Rob Janes |
