Slackware is great. I just built another semi standard box and might try Mepis out. But gonna give this distro a go. --D-SIPL ------------------

looks neat. i have a question. we have a linksys router, which has wired and wireless compatibility. will linux(any distro that's free) let me just hook up to it and it be connected like windows xp does?(hook up from nic to plug in router). i have used linux a few times, but have never had the ability to get on the internet with it(no compatible modems), which makes it totally useless to me. sorry if this is way off topic. ------------------ www.gfa.org - Gospel for Asia www.persecution.com - Voice of the Martyrs |

Im running my 3 Linux boxes through a wireless Linksys router right now. I'm running Slackware x 2 and Gentoo. Mepis had a little trouble in pervious releases but now supports it fine. --D-SIPL ------------------

I was able to connect to my hard-wired router port just fine using Knoppix. |

Isn't Knoppix just a live cd? I'm downloading Mepis now, so will let you guys know how good it is. --D-SIPL ------------------

Correct. Knoppix runs off CD. Someone recommended it because I wasn't yet ready to completely remove Windows off my machine. It was a great way for me to try Linux without having to install anything. |

Yeh Knoppix is great as a rescue cd as well. I installed MEPIS looks tight. I also got Richard Stallmans biography, which is absolutely awesome and a real eye opener. It's called Free as in Freedom. --D-SIPL ------------------

well, after using knoppix my system crashed totally, and since I couldn't get to a DOS prompt that would let me rebuild the boot.ini manually (because I need to specify that windows was on the SECOND partition of the hard drive) so I didn't like it that mush... But I really want to get a distro running on my PC, but I tried to install mandrake, and it didn't work... Sooo anyone have a recomendation? |

I got knoppix too. I got it so I could try out Linux. Really cool to have. I just used it a week or so ago to back up my files when windows was bugging out. I love open source . |

Feather Linux is 10x better. It's a remaster of knoppix, but it's less than 128 mb so it can fit onto a mini-cd or a USB drive. Because of it's small size it runs a ton faster than knoppix! It's mainly useful for surfing the web... |
