i have a 20 gauge shotgun ...my dad has a .22 pistol, and a 30/06 semi-automatic rifle. my dad and brothers are big on hunting, especially deer hunting. i just like shooting as a sport, i can't stand sitting in freezing weather and being surrounded by snow for hours at a time. plus if i saw a massive buck i'd rather take a picture of it, i figure if it's made it that long why kill it? of course i NEEDED the food i'd shoot it, field dress it, cut it up, cook it, and chow done, but no necessity.

i kind of always wanted a sword, i just end up blowing my money on computer parts(which i rarely keep or use!), or i blow it on a game or something else. i'd be to prone to play with it or wish i could use it though...i'd end up hurting myself.

oh, shields can be expensive.

check out this sword. it'd be good quality. 440 steel. solid, so no worries about breaking. 11 dollars. awesome deal. they don't come better than that. I have yet to see a better deal.

check out the site arch posted. if i was going to get into sword fight i think i would go with any style that involved a somewhat short sword, and a shield. i'm not quick enough with my hands to pull of the oriental stuff.

was nothing to do with my klumsyness, i was being held by a couple of guys and used for target practice,
thankfully when the spear hit (about my left peck) i twisted and it didn't go deep by deflected under my arm pit (and a little into my arm also)

for for swordfighting, my speciality was 2 short swords
and i used to like a good archery battle with a couple of hundred people, but even the arrows with the dummy dulled heads can still do a bit of damage.

Klumsy, were you LARPing? if so, too cool.
two swords.. the only way to go! oh yeah!

so, conan, you want a big sword?

6'2 long enough for you?
The German Landsknecht Sword:
http://www.weaponmasters.com/?ID=WEAPONS&SORT=&ITEM=KE-2630

or how bout a 6 foot katana, the Masamune
http://www.weaponmasters.com/?ID=WEAPONS&ITEM=WM-5000
they have this sale thing on it now, for the first 500 preorders. save $85

or another, Odachi (translated: Horse killer ). 5'6.
http://www.weaponmasters.com/?ID=WEAPONS&FDX=&FMAX=&SORT=&ITEM=KE-2042&SORT=&FDX=&FMAX=

those are some big swords.

I'd go to battle with two swords. not short swords, tho. I don't like small. Medium to large.

i don't have a clue what larping was, but this was in a sense historical roleplaying, but not really, just training and practice in premodern warfare techniques etc, for fun, fitness and learning how old fashion strategies can be adapted into modern warfare.

as for two swords, i always found shields to be clunky and tedious and really impare movement (though when face to face with an ax thrower i'd much rather have a sheild than two swords), also i figured two swords was helping develop my brain with using my left hand more, and i could cross train by playing badminton with my left hand (or two rackets

large swords though scare me now (though they are so slow its easy to get the person first), but i got a huge slice into leg from one of those - not nice)
Japanese swords are nice, because they are so light, however i shy aware from any eastern martial art because i know so well the spiritual baggage that so often goes along with it.

no more swords for me i think, though i still like archery. i used to be crazy with my compound bows, like i'd have my friends lay down on the ground while i'd take my bow and arrow and shot an arrow straight up into the air (often out of sight) and 20 or 30 seconds later the arrow would come back down a foot or so from my friend, i can't believe how stupid i was - i mean i could have killed my friends. but archery is fun, maybe i'll find some bowhunting photos somewhere and post. I like hunting to eat and stuff, but even so , i don't like the moment that i take an animals life (though i don't have a moral thing about it, it is an animal, and i'm taking it for a purpose etc, still its life God created, and i hate it when it goes, but that doesn't stop me chasing turkeys up and down hills and hitting them over the head with 'weapons' (because hunting with a gun is just too easy, not enough involvement needed).. nothing like a meal you caught yourself.

ahhh.. cool!

LARPing is Live Action Role Playing. and stuff. basically, you go around acting like your this warrior or whatever going through certain adventures.

I love Katanas. my dad owns one (straight from Japan) and it's awesome.
but, one problem with Eastern Martial arts is that spiritual baggage. I have some roots in Asia, so that concept is not too foreign to me.

Klumsy, you into archery too?
Hey, i thought i was the only guy crazy enough to use swords and bows and medieval thingies... looks like i was wrong.
Thanks for the tips, Arch, i really like the masamune and Odachi, but the german one is out of my possibilities (in price).
Right now i use a 4' 7" sword that weighs 9 lbs. in me right hand and a foot-long dagger in me left. Beat that!!
I'm all for slow-but-accurate blows and haven't lost a sword fight in a month.
What swords do you guys use and what are your strategies?

Klumsy, sounds awsome, I'd love to try some of that stuff out. I have a couple of swords but nothing fancy. There's just no one around here who does that kind of thing, except the SCA. I tried getting into that a bit but I couldn't stand most of the people.

eastern martial arts are cool, but my interest has always been primarily with my heretige in north western europe. Kinghts all the way for me

if i were too get seriously into it i would have to keep my shield, i'm a very defensive minded guy. i might go with a bigger sword, maybe even some sort of battle axe with a spear type thing at the top. even if i didn't go with the shield i would go with a single two-handed sword, brute force and ignorance !

k, Conan, I have a 18 inch Tanto (knife).
I prefer quicker, so I wouldn't go with a 4'7 sword. 4 foot is maximum for me. got my eye on one... lol.
I want to learn double swords.

also considering getting a 2 wooden swords, to practice fighting with a friend. maybe even use it in a video project...

no.. haven't made a knife.. but I have taken apart one and modified it. lol.

Kitana's and No-Daichi are some of the best swoards. Also double bladed Axe's and Battle Axes are some of the most monsterous and best weapons to yeild in a battle for bigger stronger pepl.

Ohh and a correction to this at the start of the topic ... "pearl jams "jamie's got a gun" song."

Aerosmith wrote and sang the song .. Jamie's got a Gun.

Not Pearl Jam.

Try a claymore-- they're VERY long...
if I had a sword i would go with a claymore, a dirk in the small of my back, and a Sgian Dhu stuck in a hat.

and it's called "jaNie's got gun" as well, my mistake. i thought pearl jam done one like that, and it was about someone commiting suicide, or thinking about commiting suicide.

Only song that I really know of that was done by Pearl Jam that may be about suicide is "Jeremy". That song is based from a real life insodent. One of the first school shootings and he then took his own life.

Jamie's got a gun is aboot a girl that was raped by her own father and she took his life.

Both good songs, yet I prefer AeroSmiths Jamie's Got A Gun.

There is no double katana. Unless the fighter is using Two instead of utilizing a shield. And beside's, i'm looking and weapons from a big guy's point of view. *laughs* I prefer weapons that utilize strength and blunt force like Battle Axes and Double Axes. Also like the No-Daichi's. Huge two handed swords that are not only eligant but very dangerous and powerful.

actually... you'd be surprised what people make:
Black Ronin Double Bladed Katana (yes, it's not traditional)

but, I was referring to two katanas. not a japanese practice, but hey, I don't care. most common is a wakizashi and katana, but not used at the same time.
besides, I'm a not a small guy. 200 lbs. 6'3. and I guess yes, I do have a soft spot for really big weaponry... Landsknecht... 6'2.... ahhh...

I dont like that weapon. Seems kinda ugly if ya ask me and hard to use.

Yet it doesnt amaze me on what people come up with. Specially when it comes to modifying weaponry.
