i was just thinking if a ever do get a laptop i might just get a couple of junkers from ebay and try to build one...or just get a working one off of ebay...not the greatest, but if i get a laptop it's doing to be simply portability, not interested in playing games on it. ------------------ www.gfa.org - Gospel for Asia www.persecution.com - Voice of the Martyrs |

Not to put you off that idea completely Benny, but I just had a book published on laptop repair, and after pulling laptops apart left, right and centre, I would advise against it. While they're much more modular (and therefore repairable) then in days past, it's a very risky prospect. Unless you get a deal that's too good to refuse. |

i've seen one took apart, and i know it's not as easy as taking apart and rebuilding a desktop. but i like doing that kind of stuff, and it's assuming i can find 2 deals on the same type of laptop and one has the part the other needs and vica versa. ------------------ www.gfa.org - Gospel for Asia www.persecution.com - Voice of the Martyrs |

I'll build a desktop, but not a laptop. as Jas pointed out... it's way to complex. ------------------ |

It's not just the complexity though. Motherboard/power issues remain the biggest problems with laptop repairs, and exact replacement parts are very difficult to source cheaply and reliably. This situation is changing slooowly though, so maybe in years to come it'll be a more attractive prospect. |

how's this sound. a hp notebook with the following stats for around $1,050-$1,150: 1. athlon xp-m 3000+ sounds like a good deal to me. i don't know how good hp laptops are though. i have no problem keeping my money, 'cept when i see stuff like that. i guess where most guys get into cars/trucks i get into computers...again reaffirming my geek status... ------------------ www.gfa.org - Gospel for Asia www.persecution.com - Voice of the Martyrs |

I would see if it's possible to get a better video card. That GF4 is probably a MX. |

As far as HP Laptops go, I've used a couple and they're not too bad. I haven't noticed anything glaringly bad about them, at least nothing that couldn't be said about all laptops/computers in general. Respectfully, |
