i was wondering if xp pro is any good for a gaming system? my dad's dell with xp pro won't recognize the video card(geforce 2, 64mb) when i try just about any 3-d game. i was wondering if it might just be the video card, or if xp pro is simply for the workstation? any advice welcome.

It's perfectly fine for gaming. Go to nvidia's site and download the latest drivers.

This might not seem very important, but a lot of antique gamers like myself, have had problems with DOS games under XP.

i don't know if i even have any dos games :-p. i use to, but now i really just play freelancer, and online games like utopia and earth:2025. i can do anything other than play 3-d games on my dad's computer. that's the main reason i don't want xp pro, because i don't wanna blow over a hundred dollars on it and not even be able to play games. my dad's computer is kind of buggy anyway, but when you have people running stuff like kazaa, and doing anything they please on it something's bound to go wrong. dad's computer is the computer anyone can use. mine's locked down tight, at least as far as my family is concerned. anywho...

For today's games, yup, it works quite well. I'm using XP pro (and if you get XP, I do suggest go pro) and I can play any game on the store shelves no problem. Sounds like it's your video card.

For DOS games, you'll have problems, though - you might have to dual-boot or use an emulator (such as DOSBox) for DOS games.

i'll prob'ly get windows xp pro update for my dell, which my friend and i slapped in another case. i only a have a 1.4 p4 and a geforce fx5200, but i plan on getting a 2.0ghz p4(the max my motherboard can hold). i also have 640mb of ram, but i want another 512 stick to round it off to a nice gig . i also want one of the 10k rpm, 320mb per second of data transfer scsi drives too, but that's quite a while down the road. oh, and i also should prob'ly get a job first!
