What are they using for an OS? OS X? OS X.2? Either way you'll be having fun :-) It's not to terribly hard to get used to, but it is interesting.

Well, if you're used to OS 6-9 then you should have no problem. I fixed a PC using Mac OS X not too long ago, and it didn't take me too long to get used to it, though it wasn't using the latest version, Panther. The major difference is the Dock and the *nix specific stuff that is mostly hidden away except unless you enable the ability to see it.

I've never used any Mac OS. I suppose i just want to make the most of it, and haven't got a lot of time to really delve into it, so was hoping it would be fairly easy to pick up.

thanks guys.

Mac is very close to windows imo-----I learned many programs in Mac before I ever touched Windows------Mac seems to follow the KISS (keep it simple stupid) routine very well---which means even 5 year olds can pick it up easier than windows----it has a feeling of everything being automated where Windows has a more 'do it yourself' thingy going on----if your church is interested in photo stuff-----everyone and their dog tells me that Mac is the best photo-editing platform on the planet (something about the screens on them or something like that)-------------but yeah it is a pretty good platform---so is Linux like Windows?

Thanks for your comments Zookey

In some ways it is, with X-Windows installed anyway. But imo Linux gives a lot more flexibility and is a lot better for a power user. And the server environment, is second to none imo.

With the bonus of open source software, and pretty much everything you could ever need available on the distro, i think it is something that everybody who is competant with computers should try. If not just for the experience. You learn a lot.

Windows still has it's place on one of my computers, but Linux pretty much rules my bedroom.

Oh and btw, the church purchased the G5 yesterday, and will possibly be delivered today

I'm a Mac user. (The old Mac's strong point was a very logical user interface, and the OS X has unfortunately lost some of this but runs more dependably under the surface.)

Anyway, D-SIPL, it shouldn't be hard to get used to it, but I'll be happy to try to answer if you have a question or problem.

Thanks Curry. Everything is going well so far. We're just about to order InDesign or something like that. The OS X configuration was a walk in the park to set up, and adding users etc (a lot like xp). And yeh, it has a very logical flow to it.

If i get stuck i know who to ask

Wow, I'm surprised there haven't been any anti-mac comments. I would be making them myself, but Macs totally saved their reputation with the release of OS X. The GUI is just beautiful, and it automatically became cool when I heard they redesigned it to be Linux-based. That being said, I would never own a Mac simply because you can do so much more with Windows or straight Linux (not to mention Macs are freaking expensive).

That said Macs cant be rivalled in multimedia production imo. Nothing will ever take Linux's place on my pc's though

as far as software goes, alot of multimedia software on PC has exceeded the mac versions. however mac architecture and OS make multimedia more seamless, less latency in recording etc. the reason PC preforms so bad in this is part due to the physical architecture and part due to windows while from time to time like to grab alot of the processing power and do some internal administration..

one interesting things to note for mac is a program called virtualPC, that allows you to install and run windows on a mac and apparently it works very smoothly.. an interesting note is micrsoft recently bought out the company that makes virtualPC - for numerous reasons (it allows running virtual PC's on a PC as well), one of the big reasons is for the next Xbox, they are planning on using a powerPC style chip from IBM and will use the virtual PC base to provide backwards compatibility with current generation XBOX

Richard my man!

I have a couple of macs I don't use (older style) that I got for a project that I have made zero progess on (sound familiar???).

I know nothing about Macs!

That being said, anyone giving up a ibook for a song? I may actually use a modern version.

Keep on praying.
