Just wondering - are there any programs that actually require 2 GHz?

try playing Battlefield 1942 without that... soooo slow.... alot of new games require faster comps.. and if they don't now, they will later.

(speaking of new games, just found out about War of the Rings... looks like a LOTR style WarCraft... me wanna play)

I'm game. Main PC is a HP notebook - 2.6 GHz, 60 gig HDD, ATI graphics card ( 1400x1050 15" display ), only 512 MB RAM, soon to be a gig.

My main desktop is 2 GHz, 768 MB RAM, 200 MB of HDD space, 19" monitor, cheap graphics card ( I don't play games, all I need is a high resolution and a TV out ), DVD burner, video capture, etc. Then I have 2-3 other computers flying around, one of which my daughter uses to great effect.

Just out of curiosity, how many people are using an OS other then Windows?

Now i'm not starting a I hate Microsoft thread, because there good at what they do. I'm just wandering if i'm the only one using Linux, or are there others. How about any Mac users?

Lets get ancient,
My PC specifications are

AMD 200(no I have not missed a zero out)
Windows 95
HD 4.2GB
CD Rom drive

I have another old computer that I installed Linux onto, but I just use that for tinkering around. I use a modern PC at work and have free access at my local library to a state of the art machine. I find that all my office based software works fine on my PC. I find it much more comfortable to play games on PS or Xbox.
I also own 3 old Amigas which I like for games and 2 Dragon 32s, which I keep for sentimental reasons

I've got two PCs. My newest (dedicated for work): is 2.4 GHz P4, with 80GB 7200 RPM HD, 512MB DDR. I've got graphics card issues right now, but hopefully I'll recieve my Radeon7500 64MB card in a week or two. This machine will run only OpenBSD (so far), although I might add the Gentoo extension to it that is in alpha stages..

I've got a 21" monitor for my main PC.

My main computer right now has Win98 and Gentoo Linux on it. Somehow, I killed my network on the Gentoo.. oh well. 700 MHz Athlon, 768 MB SDRAM, 20 GB 5400 RPM HD, 64 MB Savage 2k.

2.4Ghz Pentium IV
128M ATI Radeon Card
512M DDR Ram/233Mhz FSB (or 333, can't remember)
dual 19" monitor screen (pride and joy there. I'll never go back.)
100G 7200RPM drive

Gentoo rocks my sox!! It's brilliant, can be a bit of a pain to install, because you have to compile absolutely everything, but is so easy to update and install new packages. For instance (for those who don't know Gentoo or Linux) you can type emerge <insert program here> and it will install the very latest stable copy of that program. And to update your whole system type emerge sync. Superb!!

I use Slackware, and eagerly await Slackware 9.1, but will put Gentoo on my new pc i'm building.

I see a few names here that I haven't seen for a while. Good to see you guys. Gump, I like your system, wish I had a 9800.

Chippy, you have my deepest sympathies. If I lived closer, I'd buy you a faster computer, probably a Commodore64 or a ZX Spectrum...
Archangel, you are right about Battlefield 1942, I absolutely love playing that on LAN but particularly the Desert Combat mod for it or the Desert Combat EXTENDED mod which are both absolutely AWESOME!! Yes I mean to shout. Anyway, here's one of my meagre systems:
CPU:AMD 2100XP
HardDrive: 60 giga @7200 and 20giga@5500
Video Card:ATI Radeon 9000 Pro
RAM:512MB
Sound Card:SB Live
DVD Drive:Pioneer Slot DVD
CDR/W Drive: Ricoh 8x4x32
Monitor: 17 inch flat screen ViewSonic, and 19 inch Mitsubishi Diamond View
DirextX 9.0
Windows Millenium

and more interestingly, here's the software I normally have running in the background:
CPU Idle (cools it down nicely).
Zone ALarm (keep the baddies out)
AVG Virus (kills em if they make it in).
Event Reminder (tells me whose birthday it is today/next week).
Hotsync Manager (for my lovely full colour Palm Zire 7.1 with built in camera(but wish I'd bought a Pocket PC now )

I also have a Compaq Pentium 400 laptop (no 3d acceleration ) and a networked AMD 700 Duron for playing Tactical Ops, Counterstrike, and Day of Defeat.

Archangel, have you tried DC Extended? It's basically a mod for DC, if you can believe that! It is excellent for LANs, and fun for a bit of single player too. It has better Tomahawk guided missiles, SAM guided missiles, Turbo charged Dune Buggies, Sea Hawk helicopters, Miniguns on both sides of the Black Hawk, some of the apaches have guided missiles, AC130 can drop buggies from the rear, Harriers have forward thrusting bombs (mini missiles), and a host of other beaut features. It's tough to track down so if you can't find it let me know and I'll either host it for you or find it.

Well I just finaly got my new PC running I also have it LAN so im really having fun with famly and friends. The old PC is a 1.1gig and the new one is a 1.3gig. Other then that they are just plain jain PCs. Still im having a blast and new games only have better graphix (they still suck in game play).

~Angel~

PS if anyone wants me to test their game out on a LAN I can.

Archangel, I forgot to mention it also allows you to remote control scud missiles (oooh yeah baby!!), you get demolition trucks, minelaying/ammo drop trucks, and miniguns as AA guns on the ships, which rip jets to bits in no-time.
