Would such a game be interesting?

Maybe so, but far be it from me to cause someone to stumble...

Interesting.

What's wrong with combat?

Sure, puzzles are always fun.
Games w/o combat can often be fun.

it looks good
and also a fresh idea, thinking outside the box
good to have something quality without combat
a quite good innocent game..
however when playing it there could be one showstopper for me
and that might be what is involved in the 'art of worship'
if it involved developing rituals etc according and contains stuff that is definately wrong , then i'd have to get out.. but if it allows you to develop worship rituals according to our own decisions and thus you can choose not to do any of the icky things, or use any pagan idols, objects etc... then that is cool... but i'd hate for suddenly to progress in that field and see my character suddenly quoteing from the book of the dead, sacrficing a baby, or doing a voodoo dance..

but beside that precaution.. i love the idea.. and probably will have a play sometime.. makesure you remind us when the game is released..
b.t.w do you think the developers could actually be christian?
with an web address such as egenesis.com??

should contact the devs i think and do an interview..

Is this totally free? Is there monthly fees or something?

Allow me to introduce myself... my name is Josh, I'm the lead programmer for A Tale in the Desert. I bumped into this discussion board by accident... I occasionally like to find out where our visitors are coming from, and some links led back here.

As it turns out, my business partner and I were both raised Jewish. Neither of us is very religious, although both of us believe in God.

The game contains "seven disciplines", one of which is Worship, which clearly contains a pagan aspect. Rituals in the game are non-violent. For example, typical acts include: sacrifice of bread and beer to Hathor, light a torch in the name of Ra, etc. All of the gods we depict are beneficient, nobody worships anything malevolent. But it's definitely pagan.

Ascent is correct in saying that if that discipline doesn't appeal to you, there are six other disciplines in the game, which are almost entirely secular. And the main activity of the game, managing material resources, is totally secular.

I downloaded ATITD, started it and ran about an empty landscape a bit.

Should be interesting, beta 3 is this friday, correct?

Firstly, i have not looked at the game yet, only read the messages here, but here's my initial reaction.

Can anyone really say paganism is less dangerous then uncontrolled murder? simply because a game has no viloence does not make it something I can support, quite teh opposite, i belive all content is important. Dont get stuck on one issue of being moral, look at the whole picture.

On the same topic, i agree that some people are looking for less violent or even non-violent mmorpgs. in ultima online, there are 2 main groups, the adventerers and the crafters. the crafters mainly learn non-combat trades, like smithing and carpentry, while teh adventerers concentrat on learning tactics and weapons training. While much in the game is completly ungodly, that main idea is not a bad one. i think there should be both, where there is life (natural, not spiritual), there is conflict.

therefore i sugest a game more based on trades, or activitys of a life rather then on combat: make combat a side issue, something that happens ocationally, but most of your time should be spent doing an activity or trade. thats my idea anyway.

Veri, I downloaded it because It looked interesting, the concept was interesting,
Not because there is no combat.

i've never played a mmrpg before.
This is free for now, so i'd figure i'd give it a shot.
I probably won't play when it fees are instituted.

Maybe not physical combat.... but combat in the form of politics will still be VERY interesting because of the role playing possibilites. If this game evolves to the point of having "court politics" such as that seen in old Europe then...

Dangerous as in it will take too much time from getting work done? Or dangerous as it has some very questionable aspects to the gameplay from a Christian point of view?
