Your copy of windows is not legal, as you do not have the CD. A lot of people who sell windows illegally put the cab files in a directory called win98 on your HDD, if that directory is there, try pointing windows to it. The long and the short of it though is that you should either contact the people who sold it to you, or buy a copy. If you have an OEM sticker on your box, then you're certainly entitled to the CD.

if you have the oem number you might be able to request a duplicate disc from M$ - not sure as i've never had a problem like this. it's worth a look tho. some software companies do this if you have proof of purchase - the oem is just that and i would think that M$ would be able to provide you a new disc at minimal cost. but - as we all know - M$ has there own way of doing business. best of luck to you.

Hmm.

No CD? Not even a restore?

Check the hard drive for a directory or partition for restoring the computer, some people do that.

but if it's on another partition or directory, it shouldn't ask for a CD!

Hmm, doesn't sound good. It might not be legal.

Too late now but in the future also check under:

C:\windows\cabs
C:\windows\options
C:\windows\options\cabs

Sometimes they copy the files of the CD over on the hard drive for convienence.
