I recently got a HD from my school (actualy a whole computer for doing work their) and at some time they had compressed the drive, and then the teacher formated the drive. so now when i try to install windows it says that theirs a disk-cache and/or compression problems, and it asks me for a "Disk Compression Software". I have search for this on the net but have been unsuccessful in my findings. If anyone can help it would be greatly appreciated seeing as it'll save me $50-200 bucks.

I am not sure what version of Windows you are trying to install, but this is usually easy to fix. Just get your boot disk, and then run FDISK and delete the existing partition on that drive, and then create a new partition, exit FDISK, reboot and then you should be able to format it just fine.

I had the same response from a friend off mine but it didn't work, even though i tried it twice. but thanks for the help anyway. another person on a diffrent message board said that i should hook the drive to this computer and then do something (too long a list) to de-compress the drive that way. so hopfully ill have the time to do it today. thanks again!!

Are you sure you are selecting "delete non DOS partition"?

Hope it helps, if not I am sorry. I am going from memory. I use XP now and before that only used NT4 on my development system. FDISK is used much differently on these OS'.

If nothing else, some BIOS (especially older ones) are capable of doing a low level format from the BIOS setup. This would also work in your situation. With some searching you could posibly find an old low level format program on the net. After doing a low level format, you would need to use FDISK to partition the drive as normal and then do a regular format on the drive.

I know it was compressed when you got it, but for the record disk compression is pretty bad. DoubleSpace was horrid, Stacker was worse, and DriveSpace has become progressively worse. In the old days I used it because I had to, this was back when you were paying $300 for an 850MB hard drive.

I did find one compression system one time called FreeSpace that used true ZIP compression on the files. It actually worked seamlessly on 95&98 and there was not any noticible speed issues. One time it messed up when the computer froze up, but that was easily remedied. Cheaper, Multi GB hard drives has pretty much the need made compression obsolete.

That's "non DOS"

Maybe you should have somebody really good with computers take a look personally? It's difficult to diagnose what's wrong with your HD over the forums.

You should be able to delete all partitions, then create a primary one using all available disk space. I don't see how compression should get in the way of FDISK.

See if you can use the fdisk that comes with a minimal Linux installation

???
That might be too advanced, though; Linux isn't exactly friendly without a windowing system.

Find a computer person that can be there physically.
