Well, good luck man. I'm looking for the Linux Link Tech Show episode where they interviewed a Linux guy who got hired by Sun to work on Solaris. He sums up solaris this way:
"It's where Linux was 10 years ago".

It's an up to date OS, but missing some of the latest [in] technology trends. I'm in the process of downloading openSolaris myself.

I have installed and used Solaris 10. It's not bad, a lot better then previous versions, but I still found it a little confusing, it doesn't always seem to adopt the most logical way of doing things.

If you have used any type of Unix before, you should feel at home though pretty quickly. I just don't see how it is any better alternative to BSD or Linux?

the only *nix i have used is ubuntu/kubuntu and the icewindow mangaer on mandrake liux .

as far as being easy goes i don't think it would be too hard plus i think the dvd i ordered is a developer edition so it might come with netbeans, and the latest jdk.

hey does anyone need a link for the order page??

and i don't think solaris is a linux it's it's own kind of unix right?

or does it use the linux kernel??
EDIT: here is the link to the order:

The nice thing about Solaris is that it has standards that have to be met. I've used it a little bit, and it does take some getting used to (coming off of Debian), but it's very solid.

Oh, Solaris is in fact Unix, not Linux. There's not a huge difference, but that standards thing comes into play. Solaris (and other Unix OSes) is still a big deal in corporate environments last I checked. In other words, you're more likely to see Unix than Linux.

Well put. Linux is it's own Unix-based, POSIX compatible OS.

I believe that programs like Firefox and OpenOffice have Solaris builds. Wine is reported to run on Solaris (x86 processors only) which would allow you to run many Windows programs. Linux programs would most likely need to be re-compiled specifically for Solaris. It is a POSIX compatible OS, so this should be fairly straight-forward. A google search showed some sites with Solaris builds of popular open source software.

I assume that you'll be right, Steveth. I've installed Firefox on Solaris (on the SPARC hardware). I've also gotten the Java 5 JDK running on Solaris. It's not too complex. Fortunately, most apps are easy to install by simply downloading them and running a basic sequence of ./configure ./make ./install.

quote:
One of the interesting things
you discover when you run an OpenSolaris
distribution like Nexenta is, my goodness, it
looks just like Ubuntu. And you know, there’s
a really good reason for that: because it is
Ubuntu, but it’s got a Solaris kernel in it.

When you look at what UNIX-like
operating systems really are, each is a set of
editorial choices about which free software
userland to assemble around which kernel.
So you discover that everyone in Fedora, and
everyone in FreeBSD, and everyone in
OpenSolaris are all using the same stuff.
They’re all using GNOME or KDE, they’re all
using Sendmail, and they’re all using Mozilla.

In the Solaris community, they’ve tended
to use the OpenSolaris ON, which is the
OpenSolaris jargon for the kernel and network.
ON stands for Operating System/Networking.
And the userland that’s around it, well, there is
a style of userland that’s used by people who
run servers. And then there’s the style of user-
land used by developers, and that’s typically
GNOME or KDE, and tools. And it’s just the
same on Solaris as it is on Fedora. The look
and feel is different, the editorial choices about
where to put the icons are different, but
ultimately, it’s all the same stuff.
EDIT: (Interview with Simon Phipps, Linux Journal Issue #158, page 48)

WINE works on the x86 version so as long as the program can run in WINE it should work without a hitch.
