In case you have not heard, you can get Visual Studio 2005 Standard for almost free if you watch and evaluate two of Microsoft's Visual Basic Labcasts. There is a nominal fee and shipping/handling charges.

Nearly free Visual Studio 2005

I have already watched one and evaluated it. I will probably watch a second this weekend. I have already received a phone call from Microsoft about it, but I haven't returned the call. Hopefully tomorrow.

The Labcasts are actually pretty cool. You are working in Visual Studio over the web and doing labs and stuff. Pretty neat. I will probably start taking some others on C#, C++, and database.

Please no comments about how non-MS compilers/languages are free and require no hassles. I just want to let others know who may desire/want Visual Studio Standard if you want to upgrade from the Express Editions.

It is VB.

Hmmm… I’m tempted to do this, but I’m fairly rusty with VB now. I have the VB Pro box set but it’s an older version now. Been wanting to upgrade… ah but I probably wouldn’t use it since I’m too busy with BlitzBasic. Tempting though...

Visual Studio 2005 Standard Edition includes Visual Basic, C#, C++, and J#. If you're interested, you can download Express versions, which are divided up by language (Visual C++ Express, Visual Basic Express, etc.) The labcasts you have to watch and evaluate are focused on Visual Basic.

As Steveth mentioned, the Standard Edition contains all of the languages (C++, C#, VB, J#, and I think ASP.NET) wrapped into one package and IDE. This means you can have projects spanning multiple languages, unlike the Express Editions.

The required Labcasts use Visual Basic, and I actually found the first one to show off some really nice features of VB. I forgot to mention, the labs are around 45 minutes to an hour.

The Standard Edition also comes with all the normal wizards to create projects (Express leaves some out). The Standard edition for C++ also contains the Platform SDK (for Win32) and MFC. Express C++ requires a separate download/install of Platform SDK and does not allow MFC work.

Yeah, just finished the second lab,

Approximately two weeks after we receive both of your evaluation forms, you will receive an email from Microsoft with detailed information on how to order your complimentary copy of Visual Studio 2005 Standard Edition.

I would urge anyone who does not have this to get it. MS does like to give stuff away

Alright! I'll be taking my 2nd one sometime this weekend.

I called back the MS rep today and it was just some marketing thing trying to find out why I took the Labcast and my company's interest in MS technology. With a phone call followup in a few months seeing how we are progressing with MS technology.

you can nix the phone calls, there is a small check box at the bottom that you can uncheck. I do get quite a few MS phone calls, usually one a week. A small price to pay for some of the good freebees I have been getting lately. MS office professional 2007 as the latest, now Visual Studio.

I thought I unchecked all the checks. Although it seems like I filled out the same "Tell Us About Yourself" form about 3 or 4 times and started just going through it real quickly. Thanks for the reminder. I will keep my eyes open and be sure they are not checked.

Wow! You got MS Office too? What a deal!

I'm a bit confused. I did two labs but I have no way of actually telling it I completed them.

It was VERY confusing. I went through the whole lab and clicked on "End Lab Now", or something like that. You will then be taken to a survey/evaluation page.

I thought I'd get some confirmation e-mail within a few minutes, so I'd know it all went through but I received nothing until sometime the next day.

There is a place (if you are using IE ) that tells you which ones you have completed. You have to have all the security flaws open, I mean security setting right to see it

Yes. I'm so confused too. If I go to my Web Events page I have nothing in my History, but I have finished a lab and turned in an evaluation.

If I select a new Lab and click the button to "View Online", it pre-starts the lab and takes me to some other page. At the bottom is a little drop button which states "Completed Labs". If I click on it, I can see a list of my completed labs. It's listed right there as completed. Should it also be listed in my History?

Ken, what did you do to actually finish? I clicked on "End Lab Now" and was taken to the evaluation. Is there some other way to end the lab? Should anything show up in my History?

Thanks.

#1, you should get a confirmation that you completed the lab within 24 hours to your email that you registered with.
#2, you have to use i.e. and install the active X component - I think the lab wont work without it
#3, you have to completely fill out the evaluation. The first time I did the first lab, the eval didn't come up right

Then log in to the events with your microsoft stuff and you should have a list of labs that you have registered for.

The other thing, is you actually have to do the lab work to get completed, I tried just ending the lab and I did not get the eval either.

As to the ones I completed, there are only 2 available for on demand.
If you have 2 completed in your history, you should get an email with your confirmation about 10 days after your last lab is done.

Visual Studio 2005 Standard Edition

It's in stock at Amazon.com for only $249. They also list 14 other companies where you can order it online, and they are all in stock, too. Apparently, Microsoft is the only company that can't seem to get ahold of their own product. I wonder how many devs at the company are stuck using Visual Studio 2003, since they can't seem to keep 2005 in stock. </sarcasm>

Heh, Guess what I got yesterday. A large package from microsoft with Visual Studio in it. My order process is still on back order. Well it came, pretty box and all with a big sticker "not for resale" So I guess i'm stuck with it.

I have found that Microsoft usually delivers on what they say when it comes to free stuff.

No way! That's fantastic!

I still haven't done my second LabCast. Mainly because I am still confused since it doesn't seem like it took my first one. After you mentioned about the backorder, I just plain gave up. I've been in that 'indefinite' situation before and never received the stuff from MS.

this thread was related to VS2005 so it saves me from starting a new one. has anyone installed SP1 to a full copy of VS2005? the MS page said it needed 6 gigs of space which i certainly don't have left. i have a copy installed and to use Ogre 1.4 i need SP1 so does anyone have any detailed info on it? as in how much space it ACTUALLY requires on top of the install?

maybe someone would be willing to install it on a dummy computer, look at the hard drive usage, and then install sp1 and look at the hard drive usage???(hint hint) i would do it for you but i don't have a copy yet . i know you wasn't talking about getting a copy from them, i was just posting my good news . i'm really excited to be getting it, i don't care if it takes 2-3 months to get it. a full version of vs 2005 standard for a little over $10, that's great! plus with all the online books i have thanks to devry, i'll be set. also now that i've gotten a schedule/priority list thing made to help me out with managing everything i have to do i should even be able to spend some time on personal projects. right now life is going pretty great for me(God rocks!!!).

mastallama, the Express Editions are great and I have been using C# Express for about 1.5 years. Some of the reasons I prefer to use the Standard Edition are listed earlier in this thread.

With Standard you can have solutions spanning multiple language types. I use both C++ and C# and with the Standard Edition I can have a single solution containing all the projects. Standard allows you to create MFC applications, which I do use. Standard allows for various plug-ins. There are many other features offered in the Standard Edition which are missing in the Express Editions.

I totally agree, though. Download the Express Editions. They are really terrific and I'm surprised at how many features they actually contain. But if given the chance to receive the Standard Edition at such a good price, then I prefer the Standard Edition.

Business Phone Number (Area Code - Number - Extension): *

EDIT: never mind, I did it.

Glad to hear it. It's easy to forget about it. I noticed it took 10 days from the time I took my 2nd lab to the time I received the e-mail. I still don't even see anything listed when I go into my account. So it's just a confusing system. But in the end, we all seem to be receiving the e-mail. Just gotta be patient.

I know. .NET 3.0 and 3.5 are here before most people are even taking advantage of 2.0.

My personal development is based on two things:

1) Work-driven. Is it something I can use for work? Will it be beneficial in my job?

2) Can others use it without having to install anything else?

Right now, the Orcas is no to both (except for maybe the Communication Framework). I mean, how many people do you know even have .NET 2.0? Let alone 3.0 or 3.5? In any case, I have been reading up on the new technology features so I at least have some background when I am ready to move forward.

just so you know, you dont have to install the msdn library, though it's faster on your drive, the entire msdn library can be viewed online.
