I've had good success using Dorgem to automatically take pictures and upload them to a website, so that the image refreshes every 30 seconds or so. I don't know how to do actual streaming video though, if that's what you're asking for. --clint |

for that you need: A. A good video camera, IE, not a USB Webcam B. A fast connection C. A high bandwidth server It would be much easier if it wasn't live, but you made a video Podcast for example ------------------ |

Firewire (IEEE 1394 for those non-mac users) is much faster then USB for data transfer rates (ie: webcams would be better using firewire then usb) ------------------ |

can you use regular digital cameras instead of webcams?? ------------------ Jesus answered, "I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. |

regular DCs generally use USB to plug into the computer.(unless it's some sort of uber-camera). i don't think using USB would be a show stopper though, at the worst it'll just be crazy-slow. ------------------ |

I do a lot of multi-media (though not streaming on the web). I always use a 3-chip consumer-level camcorder. Currently, I think Panasonic is the only company that uses 3CCD technology in consumer-level cameras. You don't absolutely need 3CCD technology in your camcorder--it just insures that your image will be broadcast quality. I've used lots of different cameras, and the Panasonic is just great for multi-media stuff in a typical church. Whatever brand you choose, you need something that will hook up to a firewire connection--namely, a camcorder. You can get a great camera for what you need for under $400. If you look on ebay or something, you can get something for under $200. |

that's nice ,you know i just realized something i don't think i have ever used anything that's got anything to do with firewire. i was thinking of using a tv-capture card but the last time i used that the image quality was bad and it was a big mess and i don't know if java works with tv-capture cards . i'll google up firewire.... ------------------ Jesus answered, "I am the way and the truth and the life. really, your first concern is going to be bandwidth. Next to that is the camera and i agree that firewire is the best way to go. If the church is willing to fork the money over you should look into a nice DV cam with a firewire port, we use 'em at work at they're beautiful. As for streaming, a few years back i looked into a bunch of that stuff and the best out at the time was some M$ streaming server thing. With a quick search in Google and SourceForge, I just came across these few things: Apple Darwin Streaming Server - Open Source - several versions for different operating systems, not just MAC EDIT: Mpeg Recorder - Open Source - claims to work with Apple Darwin Streaming Server LiveCam - Open Source - only linux based for web cam streaming Just keep searching!!!
