Hi, I'm looking for some (hopefully free/open source) software that would be able to create animation movie. An ideal would be a program that would allow making game like cutscenes having just some bitmaps or vector graphics and moving them around and adding text for the story and dialogs and so. Sorry that I cannot come up with better description but it could be used to make dialog between two characters or show a animated traveling path of Abrahamn, as example. Any one knows if there is anything like that? ------------------ [VoHW] (Help needed) [Blog] - Truedisciple (mp3) |

While I've never used it I've heard that Blender is pretty good. |

The GIMP has an animation plug-in that may be what you are looking for. I can't remember the name of it right now but I'm pretty sure it's in the GIMP's Download page. ------------------ |

Gimp is good, though if you'd like to create a Flash presentation I might recommend Wink. Gotta' run, so you'll have to google it, but it's really good for making presentations, especially interactive tutorials. --clint |

Sounds like Flash is exactly the sort of thing you'd want. There are some attempts at an open-source version of Flash going on right now, but while some of them are quite usable, they're not very polished yet. --clint |

I think you are right Clint and I have actually used flash before. Well I'll give a try at those OS versions. Thanks! ------------------ [VoHW] (Help needed) [Blog] - Truedisciple (mp3) |

Jari, it sounds like you need at most 3 or 4 elements: a scrolling map, a dotted line that creates itself on the map, a little figure of Abraham, and a scrolling text. Or two guys talking, like you said. If you're making an .mov file, this is what I'd do: open the map in a paint program and save it as a jpg. Then draw about 1/5 of the path on it and save that as a jpg. Then draw more of the path on it and save that. After you have completed all 5 parts of the path (you'll have 5 jpgs.), go back and open them all and add in Abraham. Then take your 5 jpgs into iMovie, and lay them in the timeline, one after the other. Make them all about 5 seconds long. Then combine them, each to the next, using the fade transition so each one fades into the next one. The whole segment is about 20 seconds long. Save that 20 seconds as a .mov and then erase everything and import the 20 second movie back into iMovie. Now add your scrolling text over the top using the "Scrolling Credits" option in the section that makes titles and text and stuff. You can even add an audio track. It takes more memory, but saves you a lot of programming, and you can do wipes and effects and other cool things. Hope it helps. |

I think Jari is running Windows XP, but he can do similar things with Windows Movie Maker 2 (which is a free download from Microsoft). Good advice, Jeff. ![]() --clint [This message has been edited by HanClinto (edited August 04, 2006).] |

Thanks for the advice Jeff but I'm looking for solution where you don't have to draw each frame by hand but instead use objects to make the scene. ![]() ------------------ [VoHW] (Help needed) [Blog] - Truedisciple (mp3) |

Hrm... I wonder if it would just work well to write it in code with pyGame. |

You can create decent 2D stuff with GameMaker (free!). You can program in a preset path to take, or just use your arrow keys to control a charater and have it walk through the scenery. Play the game in fullscreen. Then use FRAPS to record a video. I haven't used FRAPS in years. It has become MUCH better over the years. Unfortunately, I think there is now a watermark and 30 second time limit for the unregistered version. |

you can use the new version of pivot, it can load bitmaps and move them around and such... also it can have a background image. tho you may not want to save to .gif... if you are interested, here's the dl for version four: http://filenuke.com/yourfiles//1141905832.zip ------------------ RADIOACTIVE IE AHEAD! int name() |

Thanks guys! I think gamemaker is the best solution at the moment even flash would probably be better but the latest release of flame project doesnt run because of missing dll. ------------------ [VoHW] (Help needed) [Blog] - Truedisciple (mp3) |

You could try TISFAT (http://tisfat.cjb.net) it has Bitmap support and easy pathing, plus if you want to make a stick movie it's perfect. NOTE: If you're gonna use TISFAT I advise using a face stick and removing every limb but the head. Although Gamemaker would be a better option.... ------------------ |

Thanks but stick animation is not quite the style I'm looking for. ![]() But I used RPGMaker XP to make one representation, you can view it from here: http://www.christiancoders.com/cgi-bin/ubb-cgi/postdisplay.cgi?forum=Forum6&topic=000200 ------------------ [VoHW] (Help needed) [Blog] - Truedisciple (mp3) |

Anime Studio is a pretty good tool. It's fairly low cost as well. ------------------ |

Hmm, I think that is not quite suitable for my purposes D-SIPL. Thanks though! ------------------ [VoHW] (Help needed) [Blog] - Truedisciple (mp3) |

I think one of the most over looked free programs on the net is truespace 3.2. There's probebly some good reason that people don't prefer this software but I think its great. Very Easy to learn and to use. Mayby it doesnt have the right game exports or something. but.. Here's the link anyway http://forms.caligari.com/forms/ts3all_free.html ------------------ |
