Planning on gaming on it? If so, make sure it has the ATI 9000 Mobility which you should be able to find for under $1500. The 9600 mobility would be preferable but the cheapest laptop I've seen with that was around $1700.

Search using www.pricewatch.com ; I also saw what looked to be a good one from www.eurocom.com (Monte Carlo).

Yeah definitely get one with a good 3d chipset. So many games even that are 2D in nature, require 3D acceleration. Also, look into getting a DVD player included. Might cost a little bit more, but so much cheaper than buying a portable DVD player (and you'll get a much bigger screen).

For a little over 2,000 dollars, you can get an alienware Area51m laptop--and trust me those things are unruly----it is over 3,000 if you sup it up (which is why I am saving up, around 1,200 dollars as we speak:-))--------but in the end I think you would be happy with it:-)

Problem with the Alienware is you pay a lot for the namebrand, especially considering the specs are comparable to the link I posted.

I ordered a great laptop with all the stuff I wanted

128 meg ram
floppy drive
DVD reader
CD-R
nice sound system

I paid for it (£999) then got a phone call stating that that model was no longer available

the next model up had

256 meg ram
CD-R
DVD reader
nice sound system
"BTW laptops don't have floppy drives anymore"

sheesh, why did I swallow it? anybody else working without a floppy drive nowadays?

The laptop i'm typing this up on doesn't have a floppy drive, i don't think i've used a floppy in a long long time, so no need for one at all.

Come on mate get with the times...
