Okay I go to a Christian based school. I myself am a Christian, and I wear black. The people at the school look at me and yell"Goth". Then they start telling me that I am satanic. Why is it that if you were black that you are considered Goth. The Bilble tells us Judge not for thou shall be judged. Okay if they are Christians, and they follow the Bible why would they do that? I know that everyone sins, but does everyone have to use the same sin? What if we all decided to steal, we would end up with nothing.
I know that I judge poeple also. It is a mojor problem in society. The thing is, since I am a Christian am I not supposed to wear black?

Hi windrider, welcome to CCN!

Being a Christian has nothing to do with or without wearing black. I think it's pretty legalistic to judge someone based on the color that their clothes are. Instead, they should care about the person who is in the clothes.

Many people judge others based on appearance because it makes them feel better about themselves. Pretty lame but true, (yes even in Christian circles... how sad) and some people just like to poke fun at others and have something to talk about, which is certainly not Christlike.

But here's a question. Calling you satanic is not cool. Is the only reason that people call you these names because you wear black? If so, then the question arises, ... what Christian school is it that you attend?

Hey windrider, hows it going?

I would like to say that judging people by appearence is totaly foolish but the fact is that appearence is one of the most telling things we have to go on when we form our perceptions of other people. People choose, in most cases, to appear as they do and as a result we can discern some things about them from how they choose to appear. This is especially true when it gets down to things like body language, and how people interact.
It is also a fact that people will always form judgements about you based on your appearence, until such time as they get to know you and can find out more indepth what your really like. The upside of that is that you control, mostly, how other people percieve you through your body language and your interactions more than any other factors (like dress etc).

Its probably fairly foolish to make assumptions about people based on the clothes they wear, because fashion involves alot of difference in taste that really doesn't have much impact on personality. However, at the same time when people make strong statemens with their clothing is usualy does say something about them. Goths for example dress as they do to express something about themselves, in most cases.

The difference I would like to point out is that its one thing to think.. "this person looks like a goth, they probably like marilyn manson, are obsessed with death, and have authority issues" and a totaly different thing to think "this person looks like a goth there for they are worthless and to be hated".

People are always going to make assumptions about you based on how you appear, its simply how we function, but it is wrong and stupid to judge someone's value based on their appearence. (which from your description sounds more like what your experiencing at school).

Everyone has to make judgements, as christians even more so we should judge right and wrong, truth and lie, good and evil.. however, there are two things of which we must be very very careful.. first is hypocritical judgements... judge yourself first and by the same standard that you judge others. Second is judging the value of a soul.

I wear majoritly blue.... OH NO! That must mean I'm a manic depressant!

So I'll go and wear Red.... AGH! I must be a cold blooded murderer!

So I wear Green..... ARG!!!! MAJOR ENVY!!!

lol
I find people's attitudes toward fashion and colours amusing. If you wanna wear Black, be my guest. I have no qualms with it. If your 'Christian' school does, then they are a rather pathetic bunch who need to grow up and learn what 'Christ-like attitude' really means.

I'm certain that on these boards you won't get any hassle for wearing black.

I think people will make judgements or assesments of people such as "goths" because of prior experiances. Most kids at my school are either druggies or satanic - that wear a lot of black. I don't mean the occasional black hoody, I mean like everyday everything is black. Most of those kids are like that, so they don't even care if you judge them because they know that it bothers other people.

In your case, just be cool. Be yourself, and don't let anyone change who you are. No one can make you feel inferior without your permission. If you feel the need, explain that its just how you are, you like black, but you don't need to justify anything.

Hope I helped!

I want to thank all of you for helping me. I truly did not know what to do. Everyday the people at the school think I worship the devil. Tell me, how does what you wear have anything to do with if you are a Christian or not?

It doesn't, but other people who sport the look do worship Satan. People will associate you with this, its not fair, just apart of life. I'm sorry that people treat you as such. I hope you have better luck with those people.

Thank you for your help. The reason I do wear black is because I am mostly depressed. That and I am very clumsy.People just do not understand that.

Hey archangel I want to thank you for your reply. I think that black is the combination of all colors, the thing is I go to school with alot of close minded people.
I am the type of person that gets hurt very easily by what people say to me. I do not know why but I do.
Since I have found this site you all have helped me so much and II just wanted to thank you for doing so.

Personaly I find goths to be kind of annoying, and I've had friends and acquaintences who were of goth persuasion but, by and large, they seem to be very pretentious... conforming to non conformity if you will.

I, however, also like black as a color and especially for use in clothing etc. Its just classic and cool. I don't wear too much black at present but ther was a couple years there where I wore black all the time.. not because I was depressed but just because I liked the look of black and silver in combo... and I do have a smidge of a dark side that likes to pretend to be a bad boy from time to time

Black isn't the combination of all colours, White is. Black is the absence of colour.

I know quite a few Christian Goths. They're not satanist or depressed, they just like that style.

it depends on what kind of light/color your talking about... in projected light (like through a TV or from the sun) ie light that is being projected directly from a source to your eye.. white is the combination of all colors... however, in reflected light, when light is bouncing off something and then coming to your eye, black is the combination of all colors... thats why if you take all colored paints and mix them together it eventually becomes black.

i'm with arch...i kind of like the goth look. i don't understand the tongue piercings and lip piercings. i'd pierce my eyebrow if it wouldn't be such an offence/stumbling block to so many Christians around here. i wear blakc sometimes. i also wear yellow and orange...oh no...i'm turning into a prep...anywho...my favorite style is khaki's and a white pocket t-shirt. anyway...i think a lot of people get depressed over what people say. just remember that it's what God says to you that matters (and He always speaks out of love )
