I'm making a second edition of one of my paper Star Wars RPGs, and redoing lots of stuff. I'm looking at my current force powers, and really disapointed, you basically say, "Force Lightning", and it does such and such damage, or you choose for "Force Storm" which enemies to effect. It seems to be untrue to the nature of the force, and not unleash the power and unpredictablity of the force. Any ideas on how to implement this?

Luke would probably have some suggestions.

(Not Luke Skywalker - the Luke on this site. )

Hmm... randomize it? Lightning doesn't always kill here on earth, and it probably depends on the strength of the Force in you how powerful your lightning is.

True it does, but my problem is I don't only want this RPG to be one, but also to "feel" realistic. I'll PM luke.

Are you going to post a link to it when you're done?

You could have levels of Force Mastery, depending how low you are in a particual Force power will determin a random event. Maybe your a noob in Force Lighting and when 'casting' the power around metal or powered units one of the bolts could arch and hit the floor, causing you damage. Or by hitting a powered unit you could accidently shut down the power in the area, or trip an alarm, or frying your butt.

For damage, have random damage scales dependant on your skill with a random chance of a critical. If your a noob and hit a critical you could fry the whole room (including yourself) or if you roll and hit a random force event it could cause the player to loose control of the Force powers they have. That would add some 'wildness' to the Force, even if they master it you could have some random funky stuff happen.

My plans have changed, I'm just going to make an aid for the moderators. Its wasn't nor is going to be an actual game, but more of a paper game over a communication system, (phone/email/whatever) but its still going to be revamped.

I'm going to use part of your advice and going to have a random event generator with some of the force powers so than something funky can happen once in a while type Idea.

The formula for Force Lightning right now is ((d4 * (Force Sensitivity / 10) * Force Lightning Skill)) There will be a seperate experience/level set for each power.

If any one wants to help with it/be a Admin(Game Master) I'll gladly let you join. I've got a friend on with me at this moment working on new editions, moderating, and HTML. (Whilst learning the HTML)

he he... Welllll Leme think for a bit; currently your force is only positive eg, inflict pain upon enemies with impunity. However, there just has to be a trade-off of some sort, or else the winner is the one who screams off different powers the quickest.
Some recommendations for the negative side effects: lowered health for x turns, a recharge time on x power, actual damage to oneself, and then a random possibility for something totally bad eg it hits your team or whatever...

I don't understand what you're saying.

What I'm saying is that your force powers are unbalanced. Their is no reason NOT to use them. For example, in Defcon, your silos can defend OR launch nukes. So you want to be very careful when you launch silo nukes, because you will be defenseless. There needs to be a similar (although not as serious) drawback for using a force power.

I see, well one thing there is that random bad thing happening thing for destructive powers, but then there is also the fact you can only do them for so long, or you'll run out of energy, and then there's another thing is that at the beginning the force powers aren't as strong as a lightsaber seeing as a lightsaber can kill instantly (if it hits, and when you can hit them) so at the start the Blaster Characters will beat the Jedi, but the Jedi will learn enough to beat the others by a large amount.
