So last night, Clint wanted to show me what he'd been working on for me - it's this awesome little game where a little stick figure sprite that is clearly me runs around avoiding the annoying bugs (they are these bugs, I don't know what they're called but they are the bane of summertime at my house). And you go around collecting these cute little treasure boxes, and when you do a little window pops up with a little treasured memory, like, "glow worms on the side of the road" or "reading through the Psalms backwards", or other little things that have been special to us. Maybe HanClinto will post screenshots later from his computer. It was really sweet. I really liked the graphics style of it - similar to Sketchfighter - http://www.ambrosiasw.com/games/sketchfighter/ Anyway, I have to go out now, but I wanted to tell you all that if / when you have a special somebody in your life, a cute little computer game about them could be really cool. ------------------ |

Okay, here's a couple of screenshots from it. I drew all of the sprite images on a piece of paper with a normal ink pen, then I took a picture of it with our digital camera and cleaned them up in Gimp. The paper background was made in Gimp with one of their standard "parchment" filters. As Jennifer said, it's a simple little platformer where you run around dodging bugs while picking up the treasure chests that contain memories that you're trying to collect. It's a fun way to write down and review some of the special things that we like to remember about the relationship that God has blessed us with. It's kindof fun. Her hair flies up when she's falling downwards, and I tried to spend a fair bit of time getting the jumping mechanics to feel right and just fun to run around with. So yeah, it's not a dozen red roses or anything, but I'm really glad that it went over similarly well. --clint [This message has been edited by HanClinto (edited February 08, 2007).] |

That is FANTASTIC!!!! What a terrific idea. Good job! The flying hair is just brilliant. Just an all-around clever job. I really like the idea of the game being drawn by hand. I saw an XNA video demo containing a hand-drawn 3D castle you walked through in first person. The hand-drawn part really drew me to a concept of using that style of graphics for games. There is something unique about it. And in your case, I think it really added to make the game really special. Heh heh...I used that same parchment or canvas thing in my CCN game. I was going to present it as a possible background for worship songs. |

Nice job Clint! What a programming stud! Hey, on your next edit, make the "treasures" a separate text file so that us "slacking" husbands can edit and impress our lovely wives with it too! You going to charge? And to second the thoughts - Clint and Jennifer are way COOL and way helpful! They helped go pick up folks from the airport and helped with setup/cleanup at the past couple conferences. To answer Mene-Mene for David, it was CGDC06 that David got to meet Clint/Jennifer (as his butt flew off flying over to the states + crazy road trip from MN if I am remembering right). Too bad he can't make this year's conf. God bless you all, ------------------ |

quote: Haha. It's actually been a text file from the beginning -- just put a memory on each line, and it works itself through the file as you play the game (being sure to not repeat any memories collected in the same game). I might be willing to open it up for other people to use -- I'll think it over and see what Jennifer thinks about it -- it's her game after all. Thanks for the kind words, all -- it's a fun little project, and I'm looking forward to not being so incredibly busy that I can put a little more time into it. And David... wow. That picture of us is very funny. It was a really fun time we had at the CGDC last year, and I'm bummed you're not going to make it this year. :-( In Christ, |
