I need help on creating the illusion when putting your mouse over my buttons that they look indented, but when not, they look upraised, somewhat like the security buttons on food.

I only know that in order to create this illusion in drawing you use slanted lines, but I'm not sure how to differ between the two.

well... I just whipped this up here at work on MS Paint:

all I did was choose a light source(at a corner) (upper left in my case) take a colored square, color the sides toward the light a lighter color than then main color and the ones away a darker. the corner where hte two colors meet is a diagonal towards the center, but only to the width of the edge, of course.

on the down one, I painted the main color a little darker.
again, this is a really simple, fast made job.
and also, the human mind will work out alot of the details.
if it's just sitting there, the user will probably recognize it as up, and when you switch over, they'll recognize it as down.

The GIMP does this automatically for you when you create a bitmap button. It creates three versions. Pressed, depressed, and something else.

Arch, that looks pretty good!

I might not be so harsh on Fireworks. Fireworks is good for developing button rows and stuff like that when creating web pages. This is where Fireworks shines. Fireworks can also help you design images that are best suited for quality/size ratio for weg pages.

But that said, trying to create an image, use the Gimp or if you have resources go for Photoshop CS, but both of those programs have their ups and downs. Gimp is easier to use than fireworks, and unless you really need to have what Fireworks can do for web pages, don't waste your money. Anyways anyone can have a 30 day trial of Fireworks and any of the Adobramedia (Adobe/Macromedia) prodcuts

Try Before you buy. Gimp Rocks!

Go to the Xtns menu and choose Buttons, and then the type of button (Round or Simple Beveled). When the dialog opens you select your colors and such. At the bottom are checkboxes allowing for pressed or unpressed buttons to get created.

no... no, it doesn't.

this feels a little odd to say this, but Windows is more all-purpose.

"Linux is all-purpose cuz it rocks at everything."

Are you aware that one of the main concepts behind the whole unix thing was that everything have one purpose and do it well?

Somebody who is obsessed with *nix, feel free to elaborate. Please don't disagree with me though.

Really - Just as the fireworks/gimp post awhile back, each has its +/-, Linux is cool, but rocks at everything? How people would disagree if I said ..

Windows Rocks at Everything!! Especially Vista build 8397!

No, no. Vista build 8398 rocks! Build 8397 had a huge security flaw in it.

...

Wait, hold the fort folks.
Vista build 8399 is now officially out! The previous version crashed whenever you tried to run a program.

Windows rocks! Especially Vista build 8399 -

Oops, I mean 8400. 8399 had a...

Gotta agree with Arch though. Windows is very all-purpose oriented and is quite easy to learn.

...at least for me. Probably different for someone else.

I use Windows because it's a pain to reinstall it, let alone install a completely new OS.

And I know next to nothing about it.

i know fireworks is good for web design stuff...that's what i'm taking in college, then i plan on going for a bs in web development. macromedia studio, visual studio, and photoshop and i'll be set. if i end up learning php then i'll get more into linux, but as of right now windows is the best os for me. gimp is great for one reason, it's price. if it costed half as much as photoshop no one would know what it was, unless they're new pc had it included. i'm stuck using gimp for now, being broke all the time makes it hard to save any money.
