Hello All!
I've been working the last couple days on a musical theme for the opening level of Bible Dave. What do you think?

UPDATE: Here is a new version. (See my post below)

FYI, They are in ogg format, the first is about 700K, the second 1.2M

Wow! Penny, that's excellent!

I really like the catchy rhythm -- it's distinct yet doesn't sound like it copies anything else. I like the bassline that you bring in and use to compliment the melody.

I like how it's in a minor scale / bluesy, and how it doesn't really resolve except at specific points. On that subject, I think that the melody extension at 0:28 could possibly use some more resolution after it climbs up the scale (maybe just one more note on a slightly lower solid note -- though if that part is accomplishing what you want, then by all means continue -- you're the artist).

After a few times through, it sounds repetitive, and I'm glad that you start mixing it up at 1:00 -- that's good timing for that, and I'm sure as you extend that more, it will help balance out the rest of the song. I look forward to hearing how the melody will play out with different instruments in later incarnations of the theme.

All in all, excellent work! This is really fantastic work, and I think it's great for Bible Dave!

By the way, I think either Ereon or I recorded all of the sounds currently used by Bible Dave, and I'm pretty sure I recorded all of the existing music clips (like riffs and such for grabbing bibles or exiting levels) by playing them on a keyboard hooked into my computer. If you get better things to go in their place, we can totally replace them. I'm just a programmer who made them in an evening because we needed *something*.

Keep up the great work! I'm *really* happy with it! Thanks so much!

I like it too!
Except the two parts in between 1:00 - 1:15.

Good work penny!

I know its a bit repetitive still, its still a work in progress. I'll take any other comments and keep refining it. Its always good to have as many ears give recommendations on it. Actually this style is "branching out" for me as my regular pieces are a bit more peppy.

jari, what exactly do you not like about that section?

Thanks, for the comments!

Well the two unpleasant noises. Sorry that I'm not able to give you more detailed info.

I like how that part is starting to be different and yet keeping some of the same elements. I think it's a nice break to the repetition, and I realize that it's not very well finished -- that it's only a preview of what might come later.

Jari, is it more the melody that it changes to, or the instruments that are used in the new section?

Oh my bad,
I went back listening the music and I realized that the reason it sounded so bad was because I raised the amplification over 15DB (so that I could hear it better because it was recorded so low) which "broke" the sound in that part.

So please except my apologies there is nothing wrong in your music!

Thats ok! Now I know that I need to balance that track volumes. I don't have good bass in the speakers that I'm working off of here, so its had for me to tell.

I really enjoyed it. It gives me the impression that Dave is slightly confused and not sure what to expect (but it's very subtle). If you could cut down the repetivenes just a little that would be nice.

heh i thought it was a Jungle (genre) track for Bible Dave Like a Drum 'n' Bass track or something... funny how you can mis-interpret things.

For a first shot, that's pretty dang good! Yeah, the melody could use a little change-up here and there, but I think the instrument choice is excellent. This will add quite a bit to the Bible Dave experience. Great work!

Thanks to all of you for your comments!

Here is v.2. Additional comments welcome!

@CPUFreak, does this need to have an ending, or is it going to loop? Can I split it into an into and a loop? Any suggestions? Also, what about format. I notices the other sound files are in .ogg. Should we stick with that, or is there something better?

The file is going to loop so I does not need an ending. I'd prefer that you keep the file as one file as it will make it easier for us to write some code to play the music. OGG format is our audio standard now so yes, please use OGG for your music.

Wow! The second edition is great! All it needs is a few modifications to make it loop and I'm happy.

@BD Dev team: You happy with the music?

Hey Penny!

Wow -- the music is fantastic!

I've really been liking the cricket sounds in the background (or whatever they are) -- it's a nice touch.

I really like the new harmonizing chords that start around 0:30 -- I think that's excellent, and I like how it takes over for a measure at 1:00 before it switches to the more ethereal section.

I especially like the flute/fife thing that starts around 1:48 -- I really look forward to seeing where you take that melody progression. I think that's a good instrument, and that you could use it well to break up the monotony of the main melody.

I don't have much in the way of critique -- just some thoughts. Video game music often needs to be subtle in order to be tolerated for long periods of time, I would like to hear a volume adjusted version at some point that had a much softer melody for most of the song, and only bring the melody out strongly every now and then.

But that's really the only critique I have for it. You're doing an amazing job, Penny -- I think this theme music will be a great asset to Bible Dave!

Joe: I know it would be more work to code in a version that used an intro -- but I think it might be feasible, and it would certainly improve the quality of the player's experience. If it's not too much trouble, I would like to at least give it a shot. If we don't use it, we can just stick with the looped version, but I think the intro could be cool. I could go either way -- that's just my vote. In general, I'm really happy with this music!

Ok penny. Han has convinced me. Please make an intro as I would rather be safe than sorry.

Not really. Is 5 meg a reasonable cap? I don't think you're going to be anywhere near it.

5 sounds good since we'll be using it in two chapters (1 and 3 [perhaps 6]). For the others (2, 4, 5) a max of 3 megs please .

Ok, but I think I can do them all under three (per song that is).
