Texturing a knife – HanClinto

Well, I'm pretty much done with the planter pot, so I decided to tackle a different item.

I wanted to do a smaller item, and one which I could easily take source reference photos of. I settled on doing the kitchen knife, and this is what I came up with:

You can find the flat source texture here:
kitchen_knife_001_tex.png

I just took a photo of one of our kitchen knifes and sliced it up and smooshed it into place, and then did a fair bit of tweaking and I think it turned out pretty niftily. Taking a picture of the kind of metal you want is a *whole* lot easier than trying to generate that kind of texture from scratch.

Cheers!

Thanks, it's really not all that hard. It helped that it was such a simple model, and that I had a real knife that I could reference and take lots of photos of to use in my texture. I recommend that people give it a shot -- it's really kind of fun.

Very nice Han, not bad at all. Aren't you a little worried however about the reflective blade, and that it might not work for some people?

Hey Ereon,

You're right -- 'twas a little too much glint.

Here's take #2:

Any better? Further comments?

Thanks for helping!

That is so sweet Han!

It looks very clean and professional.

So, if you don't mind me asking, do you use custom brushes? lol

BTW, did you make the model yourself?

Change the dots on the handle to look more like screws or rivets depending on the look your going for. If the UV is different for both sides you could even have one side be a screw head and the other could be a nut. Your call. Jeff

Hi guys! Thanks for the comments!

Lava: Most of this texture I took directly from this picture that I took:

And I didn't make the model myself, it was an unclaimed model available for texturing over at Low Poly Coop that I picked up and gave a shot at texturing. It's the same place that I got the planter pot to try and texture. I think it's a great community for doing coop game art, and would recommend it to anyone here to get involved in doing some real high-quality game art. Some of the stuff over there is *amazing* (and all free!).

ArchAngel: Hehe. True dat. Maybe I should make a crusty version after I get the first one done.

Guategeek: Thanks for the feedback! They aren't really screws or rivets -- they're kindof just... well... flat metal. I think they're likely screws or rivets that were ground down to be flush with the handle. You can see what I mean from the source texture I posted above. A suggestion over on Low Poly Coop sounded good to me -- he suggested making the round nobbles the same texture as the blade -- I think I'll try that next.

Thanks for the feedback, all! I really appreciate it!

In Christ,
clint

Can you make it reflective? Cause the light already being on the knife looks weird :\

(I like the first one more BTW)
