I'm interested in learning how to play techno keyboard, use computer loops, and things like that, but I'm having trouble finding any info how to do it. I have a Kurzweil model 2000 keyboard, but all I have is regular, play by chords keyboard training. Does anyone know any good resources, have any advice, or know any tutorials or anything about the keyboard, or how to play techno? If you do I'd really appreciate it.

Thanks in Advance,
Ereon

well man, the thing is....techno is usually done ON computers using software synthesizers.... Ssome DJ's have loops which they use live.... but most (esp. indie) electronica is made on the computer. If you want to maker your own loops, you need to connect yer instruments to a computer. Most keyboards and stuff have midi ports, and there are other ways of doing too. Hope all that helps.
For software, check out eJay , fruity loops, acid, (those are fairly common and cheap) thats where you'd want to start out, anyway.

yeah, hes right, loops are just... well... tough. i think it would be considerabley easier on a computer, and MUCH less expensive!

Ok, I found a good program, actually two good programs, so I'm set on that, but now I need samples. Do you guys know where I can find some instrument and synth samples? I'm also looking for online downloads of sermons and such. The music if acutally for our youth group, and I thought it would be pretty cool to insert echoey bits of sermons and inspirational stuff into the intros of some of the songs.

church websites. find the website of a large church that records their sermons and puts them in a webcast.

as far as the samples go, it shouldnt be too hard. a few minutes of googling, and yu'll be set.

well, firsly good choice of music

secondly, techno is made on the computer, but if it is the loops that you want to make on the keyboard, then get a suitable program (sorry, i can't name any) for recording the keyboard. And then making the tune is easy, come on, techno may be a good genre, but it is often dead simple.

think of a simple tune, but keep it simple

eg.
♪♫♪♫♫

but keep the amount of notes in each bar down to minimum, 4-6 is a good amount.

Then, one you have your main tune, come up with some variations of that, so you might make one note go an octive higher then normal.

ok, so you might have the simple tune, and the simple variations. Now what you want to do is make a harmonising variation.

for example, it could be an octave higher then the main one, but for one of the 6 notes when the lower one goes down, the higher one will go up.

there, a simple harmony.

now, comes the spice.

a good trick to make a successful techno peice, is to layer the tunes, and make then all in the same scale, but just harmonised, and different sample sounds. Also, to spice up your melody even more, try making one note, into lots of smaller notes.

so, instead of a note being ===, change it to = = =, or better still make the last = higher and the first = lower, and then do the same for each note in the melody. therefore making a more spicy tune.

But remember, over complexity can sound over rubbish , so don't make it too complex.

that concludes my tutorial.
