wwee! a new idea! finally! I thought this might be really cool for game-player fanatics.

Okay your desktop. They range from bland, blander, to really sweet depending on your background, right? Game fanatics propably have a screenie of their fav game, right? Well, thats nice and all, but a real gamer wants something, oh, i dunno, more game like?!?

A really sweet interactive desktop! Instead of boring ol clicking on files, you can use this program (not tangible yet, still in my imagination) to make your desktop a sweet interactive game from 2d-side scrollers to 3d action games! its a little hard to understand at first but say you are bored with your normal destkop. Run the program, and to open different files, you can (example, others would be included too) open them in a fullscreen side-scroller! Pretty cool, right? This program basically is a game-lovers desktop. Open-Files (like the kind you open) would be portals to their contents. Collide with a programm that a computer can run, it runs the program! Its just like your desttop, only more action.

errr... lemme think of a good example.

Okay, you set it to, say, 3d FPS

Your desktop is now a 3d FPS! To open files, you run to giant sprite file-icons and it transports you ot the contents of the file, and so forth. Okay, so you need to open Microsoft Word (my example). In this awesome FPS desktop, you can run around shooting randome bad-guys and upgrading to super-cool weaponry and eventually find a giant floating Word icon sprite. You touch it, and your "desktop" is paused while word opens up. When you exit word, you got back to your "desktop". Now you need to open your Harddrive. Roam around a small to large level searching for it, an then touch it, and it "transports" you to your Hardrive, another level and you open up files or run different apps from there etc.

and you know, you could make it a 2d side-scroller too, ANYTHING!

And each file would have its own "level" and such, a random level either chosen or created for that specific file. new files added get their own level and such. and when you get sick of it, find the program that can change it back.

I know it seems a little much, but hey, would you use it?

if your answers no... just say so.

well, I would use it.

i would use it for a while, but then it would get a bit annoying...
also, it would be hard to do for the developer...(looking at your ideas)

hmmm RM...
u r a true visionary.
here are my thoughts on this idea:
simplify!
its a great idea, on a basic level. i think it would just take to long to open stuff if you had to search a fully 3d level, but the idea has great potential. care for suggestions? if so, keep reading---

maybs a top-down style thing where u walk to certain "portals" as u described them . (icons) Another method would be a original Donkey Kong style level. this way, you could see all of your options, just climbing to them is the game-ish part of it.

it would be a novelty, and like firemaker said, it would eventually get annoying. thats just the nature of novelties. they get annoying. lol.
so, here's how u can combat that problem:
create the prog so it runs on startup by default. It wont go right to it tho. Instead, the prog pops a message, asking the user if they want to run the (what ever u decide to call this thing), or not.
i.e. : "Would you like to run {name of prog} ?"
then they cna click "OK" or "cancel".

anyway, theres my two cents.

Hmm, i like it!

of course, im about 999,999,999,999,999,999,999,999,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 light years away from being able to even DO anything like that, but im glad you thought it would be a good idea.

Similar to what Crazyishone said, it could just be a separate program. If it was a program, believe it or not your idea could be a reality in a shorter time than you think.

Your idea reminds me of my 3d GUI idea thread. But don't worry you didn't copy me on anything.

ya know, RM, i'd be willing to work on such an idea. and it shouldnt actually be too hard....
my mind is spinning.....
in fact, this idea could theoretically be done in GameMaker....
it'd require some unorthodox workings, but it is accomplishable.
im sure an actuall language would be more suited to the job, but hey! itd be a good place to start. u could use this old thing I dug up way back when I was trying to make an OS emu...(ahh...the hard old days!)

if u decide to go for it, ill back u!

i encourage you to try it. I am in the middle of making a game with some others right now, but I'd be here to help u out if you had questions and work on solving problems if i didnt know the answer right away.
who knows, this might be the next greatest novelty since Widgets and ActiveDesktop.

Nice try though. Keep working on original ideas.

well the sphere thing is more of what I was talking about, what JayKay posted is closer to what RM was talking about, but that doesn't stop you from making a BETTER one, RM.

Ya RM go for it. Nothing wrong with improving something. Especially since that stuff is fairly new.

I have www.3dna.net

really cool stuff.
but I don't like it running in the background. and I find myself running around too much.haha.

I stick with y'z dock, which is essentially the list of shortcuts you find on the new mac OS, you know, with the magnifying and stuff... on pc. heh. too cool, man.

I know this is an old thread... but I have been tinking of something like this for a LONG time. Like, where you have a city and each building is a program or something. I just downloaded sphere though... and all I have to say is... FREAKING AWESOME!!!!!!!!

RM: I like the idea. But I prefer KDE's slide show ability if I have lots of screenies.

Still though, it's a great idea.

this is an AWESOME idea RM!! LOVE IT!! i mean, it wouldn't have to run all the time... like, if you had stuff to do, that wasn't SUPER important lol, but you wanted to have fun at the same time, you could just run this! lol... and i do think that it might be hard running around a 3D world looking for icons... you could have a teleporter thing with you at all times if you wanted to get somewhere fast but were using it for the fun or interactivity and just liked seeing everything the way it would be shown lol... one thing, if you do this, all the 'modes' should be one central game-theme kind of thing, to keep it connected... just some ideas!!
