I have a question for y'all What do you think of the platformer genre the way it is nowadays, and what would you like to see change in it? |

Interesting topic question. I for one really enjoyed "Cave Story", also known as Doukutsu Monogatari. That is the best platformer I've played in a *long* time, and I found it absolutely excellent. I think that there is still room for creativity in the platformer genre, and I think it's a style of game that I will continue to enjoy for many years to come. Even new advances such as 3d platformers were an absolute blast to play, such as Mario 64, Super Mario Sunshine, and Lego Star Wars (hey, I enjoyed it, okay? ). I think 3d is often overrated, and I still really appreciate the artwork and simplicity of 2d platformers. I'm really happy that GarageGames is developing Torque2D -- with DirectDraw being deprecated, I feared that it would really hurt the 2d genre, but I'm really happy to see so many good toolkits arising in its place -- SDLDotNet, PyGame, and now Torque2D (of course Allegro and others have been around for a long time as well, but I was just naming some of the newer ones). Cheers! --clint ------------------ |

Super Mario Bros rox0rz!!! I HATE the 3D 2D platform games... I mean, if you want a 3D game, make a 3D game! As for 3D games, Jak3 is the best one Ive played I think... The worst one has to be Tomb Raider. ------------------ |

I still enjoy platformers -- heck, when I saw there was a remake of Jetpack/Super Mario World/Mario Sunshine, I was like "sweet!", and downloaded it right away (even though I didn't get it to work with WINE. :-\ ). But anyway, I don't know what I would like to see done better with them. I know I'd like to see a sequel to Doukutsu Monogatari -- that game entertained me for weeks, and I think I played through it at least 3 times just trying different stuff and finding different secrets (still haven't found them all). Where would I like to see the genre go? I guess the same direction I would like to see any classic genre going -- continuing to make fun games while being creative and being unafraid to try new things. Doukutsu was great in that there were loads of secrets, an *excellent* storyline, and very well balanced gameplay. It didn't really "clone" any other games I can think of, but it was definately a pure platformer. I guess if there was one thing I could think of where I would like to see platformers go, I think I might like to see some of the better physics and control interfaces that we have now being put into a platformer. Remember Bionic Commando? Imagine a game like that, except instead of the cheesy bionic arm, put in a more physics-accurate ninja rope like that from Worms. I dunno' -- things like that to be creative. I would like to see people continuing to be creative with boss fights, with storylines, with items, with rpg elements, etc. It's sad for people to think that automatically "3D is better", but I also don't like to see people make 2d platformers that are unoriginal in every way. Does that expound on it a little more? ------------------ |

Yes it does. The direction I wish it wouldn't go is in the FPS shooter direction, Ratchet and Clank is a good game, but I don't want to see fifty thousand clones of it. I think the more simplistic a platformer is the better gameplay it has. I also wish they wouldn't make platformers that are just a fiasco of minigames and multi-genres. Of course there are only a few select games that can do that well. [This message has been edited by lava (edited June 21, 2005).] |

Well, I liked Prince of Persia, and I view it as the best platforming game, because of all the acrobatics and such. ------------------ |

The reason why I ask is because I am making a 3D Platformer myself. |

HanClinto, I went to that link and I've been hooked on the game since I downloaded it. One of my favorite "adventure" games is Beyond Good and Evil. It is more of a sneak around and collect things game. Not really a kill the baddies game. I used to be a fan of Super Mario 3 until Max and I beat the game... The cheesy ending just didn't sit well with me. Although the first 3 Mario games were great. Also another game that was great for the NES was Adventure Island. Truly addicting for whatever reason. |

haha -- that's great. I was hoping someone might check out Cave Story and enjoy it. I never beat SMB3, though perhaps I should try it one of these days. --clint ------------------ |

um, yeah.... *guilty look* Sonic was my weakness! It's like being a hedgehog, running through a valley collecting coins, with only his spikes as weapons - You can't get too complicated with that plot! Have a look at the game and you'll see why i was wowed! Mitchell Nunis |

Sonic *was* way-fun. I didn't get to play it very much as I didn't own a Genesis, though I think I had it for my GameGear that I got much later. Have you heard the Video Game Pianist's rendition of the Sonic music? It's sooo cool. It's on his first album, tracks 8&9, which you can freely download from his site here. Just thought I'd share that -- I think I'm going to put on my headphones and listen to it now. <g> --clint ------------------ |

Wow! I think the key to platforms - are playability, music, controls, and perhaps the uniqueness (italian brothers, hedgehog, or someother less popular animal). Would love to see the comeback of platforms! Mitchell Nunis |
