Is GameMaker6 worth buying? I know it has the 3D stuff, but is that realy any good? And all the other stuff, it looks good, but is it?

I bought it. You get access to some of the nicer stuff like transparency, .dll support, and networking stuff, plus you support further development.

If you plan on using it seriously for making games, you should probably go ahead and buy it. If you're just playing around, I guess it depends on whether you really want the extra stuff or not.

I'm not sure how to do it, I can't help you much there.

Why do you want something like that anyways?

I wanna make a nice internet game. One that lots of people can play on the same server. I want it kinda like the BYOND setup. Think its worth it?

I don't think GameMaker is the best for massively multiplayer - regular multiplayer is fine, but I don't know how well GameMaker can handle lots of players.

Also, GameMaker's 3D support is very basic. Don't expect too much from GameMaker in that area.

If you want massively multiplayer and good 3D, you should probably look into real programming languages.

If you're looking to create a "sub OS" or shell, I recommend not using GameMaker. Try Java or Visual Basic instead.

dont have either, nor do i have the knowledge to use them.

im not really trying to make a subOS. im just trying to make a program similar to an emulator or Shockmachine (which shockwave.com had made available a few years back, but is now gone.)

Still, GameMaker is generally for games. It's not designed to make apps with.

But if you really must know, you use execute_program(prog,arg,wait) to execute a seperate program.

And an emulator doesn't start seperate programs, it runs programs designed for different hardware. So no, it's not like an emulator.

Quick couple comments on the upper part of this convo. Disregard it if its been solved but I don't have the time currently to read it all.

1) Make sure you have a decently up to date computer for GM6 (at least video card). I installed it and it couldn't comprehend mine so I went back to 5.3. Plus if you're willing I can hook you up with a serial, dishonest but free.

2) Massive multiplayer on GM isn't apperently too hard. I got a friend who is currently working on a 16 player online game. He found a way to make it so there's practically no lag between machines apperently. Don't wanna spill too many of his projects though.

3) Hyperlinking on GM6: if its the same as 5.3 then on the object you want make a left click event (or whatever) and then just use a drag and drop icon that loads a webpage when clicked. IPs and mailto:'s work as well I believe.

run cmd.exe, you'll get a command line.

I'd rather you don't. Mark isn't out to rip people off, he just needs money to continue development. Besides, GameMaker is very very cheap. Other game development tools can cost hundereds! I'll rather give him the money so he can afford it.

Yeah, that's why I didn't include it in my post. When I cracked mine I was still a poor young'un with no job. Not willing to uncrack because of all the stuff that it'll lock up that I use. Besides, if he wanted it bad enough it's extreamly simple to come by if you know where to look.

Game maker isn't really for serious game making as I see it though. If you wanted to get deep into it you'd be better off learning C++ or something. I start learning that in less than a month so I dunno whether or not I'll continue with game maker afterwards anyway.

Yeah, I guess I'll keep it my little secret since its terribly dishonest as well as probably looked down on especially on a coder's network site. But just to let you know, cracking can either be easy or hard. Some just require a bit of registry editing, mabye some hex editing, others require flipping the whole executable around all together. Game maker isn't really that hard, let alone hardly worthy of being called a 'crack'. More of a public serial I'd say.

that's a common view on hacking.
*sigh*

lol. I'd like to learn hacking skills too. Hacking is an art. the ability to go inside your or one's computer.
so to a degree, I do hack. but I'd like to learn alot more.

The farthes Ive gotten on hacking is changing games slightly. (If they have outer music, sound effects or pictures I edit them) BTW how do you crack GM? I tried searching the registration to find the code, but when I open it it freezes Resource Hacker. Actualy it doesent freeze it, it just makes it so it never stops loading.

Heh I'm still a "young'un" to many but I do have a job. The point is is that spending money on a pointless hobby such as this is a waste of my pay check. I only get minimum wage and I use that mainly to either further my music library or enjoy myself with pals. I don't live in my basement, it turns out I do actually have a life.

Goop, don't go downloading hack programs. 90% of them contain virus's or trojans that allow the creator access to much of your computer. They may seem nifty but they're not worth the trouble.

Lets just get straight here on "Hacking". When you say ethical hacking, you mean like white hat cracking?

The correct definition of a Hacker

quote:

hacker ethic: n.

1. The belief that information-sharing is a powerful positive good, and that it is an ethical duty of hackers to share their expertise by writing open-source code and facilitating access to information and to computing resources wherever possible.

2. The belief that system-cracking for fun and exploration is ethically OK as long as the cracker commits no theft, vandalism, or breach of confidentiality.

Both of these normative ethical principles are widely, but by no means universally, accepted among hackers. Most hackers subscribe to the hacker ethic in sense 1, and many act on it by writing and giving away open-source software. A few go further and assert that all information should be free and any proprietary control of it is bad; this is the philosophy behind the GNU project.

Sense 2 is more controversial: some people consider the act of cracking itself to be unethical, like breaking and entering. But the belief that ‘ethical’ cracking excludes destruction at least moderates the behavior of people who see themselves as ‘benign’ crackers (see also samurai, gray hat). On this view, it may be one of the highest forms of hackerly courtesy to (a) break into a system, and then (b) explain to the sysop, preferably by email from a superuser account, exactly how it was done and how the hole can be plugged — acting as an unpaid (and unsolicited) tiger team.

The most reliable manifestation of either version of the hacker ethic is that almost all hackers are actively willing to share technical tricks, software, and (where possible) computing resources with other hackers. Huge cooperative networks such as Usenet, FidoNet and the Internet itself can function without central control because of this trait; they both rely on and reinforce a sense of community that may be hackerdom's most valuable intangible asset.

Yes i am a Linux zealot and a firm believer in the hacker ethic
