I am currently working on making a Multi User Dimension based on the trilogy The Circle by Ted Dekker. Although it is based on the battle between good and evil, the evil characters are players. I was wondering what you all think about this. I know violence is kind of going against a "Christian" game, but I don't know how to make a good, interesting game without allowing players to find against each other. And no one really dies...when you lose all your health, you must be found by someone willing to take you to one of the temples and pray to the only God (Elyon, which means most high in Hebrew) in the game. You are then returned to your original health and lose a certain amount of your experience based on how long your friend was willing to pray for you. I know this is kind of a rough outline of some of the basic contents of the game, but if you contact me I can provide you with some more info. Any criticism will be greatly welcomed!!

violence is more a debated issue in the christian gaming industry.
people like Zookey and I are fine with it, and others are not.

game looks cool.

I agree, I mean I know violence isn't exactly a Christian principle, but defending your rights, your homeland, etc. is deserving of using violence. At least that is how I feel and that is how it will be used in this game...

Interesting!

I'm encouraged by all of the great creativity I see among the developers here on the CCN boards. I think that's a pretty cool idea, and you asked for my criticism, so I'll expound on the only point that I can think to criticize/caution you on.

I don't have a problem with violence existing in a game -- that's not what I generally react to in games.

A friend of mine once told me (loosely quoted), "The problem with having Christian video games is that usually God needs to fit into the storyline. And with God as a character, that means someone has to write the script for God. That doesn't really work so well." It's the trouble with trying to put God in a box. Is that the way prayer really works? The longer you pray for someone, the more effective it is? Sometimes -- but the issue isn't time, it's earnesty of spirit and of heart and most importantly, God's grace and what He's teaching each of us at that particular moment in time. It's very hard to determine how God will react to us, because God is by nature so unpredictable. I've heard it said that the answer to the question "what would Jesus do?" is often "something unexpected". Largely, I know that's been pretty true in my own life.

So that's my only point of caution for you, is to be careful to not trivialize the grace of God.

Keep in mind I'm not bashing the idea of having prayer in a game, I just want to make sure that anyone who plays a game I write won't come out thinking that God is a vending machine, or a source of power to be wielded at our discretion.

In Christ,
clint

I think having people prayed back to life is kind of.... Well... Anyway, how will anybody win the game if everybody gets prayed back to life anyway? And the evil people, they wouldent pray to God..

Well, they won't be prayed back to life per se, they will be healed. And the prayer length thing was just an idea. I like your ideas though! Thanks everybody! And you don't exactly "win" this game. It's like an interactive world that changes everyday. The whole game idea is based on interaction between people and growing relationships. Good point about the evil people praying, Goop. I have thought about that and don't know what to do. In the book, the leader of the evil people is a huge bat named Teeleh. It is basically the equivalent of Satan in the game as he controls people and tries to get them on his side by "tickling their ears" if you know what I mean.

I am in the process of getting permission to make the game from Ted Dekker, the author of The Circle trilogy. He asked for some of my experience, which is kind of funny since I just started learning C++ so I sent him the opening screen of my MUD. I am going to upload it to my geocities site, so if anyone wants to try it out, go here...probably won't be up 'til this afternoon though!
