Hiya,

Looks like I *may* be back in the swing of things and I have a TON of things I wanna do to get back into the thick of things here

One of the projects I'm going to work on is a 2D space game that I've wanted to make since I was a kid. I know that there are a ton of space games out there, but I don't care...this one has been on my mind for years and I just gotta do it.

BUT! I don't wanna be dumb about the tools. I want the tools to be robust enough that players can create their own worlds, missions, universes, galaxies, story lines...etc. So, I'm asking for ideas on this.

Here's a list of things I've thought of thus far:

1) A Universe Creation tool that allows players to control/create sectors and such. Assigning the sector's current ownership and all that, plus putting settings for said sectors.
1a) It would be cool to have ideas for what "settings" could be hooked up for sectors: there are some obvious ones, like number of galaxies in the sector, who owns the sector, etc. Any other ideas?
1b) Any ideas for other things in sectors?

2) A Galaxy Creation tool that allows the player to place planets, moons, space stations, asteroid fields, stars, etc. in a galaxy. Any ideas that could help this tool be more coolio?

3) Finally a World Creation tool that is basically a map-maker. But here are a list of ideas that I had for it:

-Handle multiple tile sets, so the user doesn't have to put all the tiles into one image.
-Assignments of walls/floors/etc.
-Trigger tiles that the user can write script code for. Like if the player steps on a particular tile it would break and the player would fall. The code would be incorporated into the map file, and the player could enter the code in a window that would check syntax.
-Powerup handling. Similar to triggers, but a little less complicated.
-Animated tiles.
-Dynamic Map sizing...so the user isn't stuck to one size.
-Multi-Layer Z-Ordering. Allows the user to create parallaxing backgrounds and such.
-Encryption/Decryption of map files if desired by the user.
-Stacking files, so all the maps can be combined into one file...including graphic files. Would have a tool that handles the full control over this.
-Demo button that allows the user to test the level in realtime.
-Cut & Paste and all that jazz.

Anything else you can think of for this?

Note that all three of these tools would be hot-keyed so the user can switch back and forth between them and do realtime changes.

Well, thanks for any ideas you can give!

Sounds great.
I have an idea that you might think is stupid or not applicable. But I am designing a 3d space game, but you could do it in 2d - I don't care if you use this idea.

Idea: You are in space - each sector is a bible book, - each chapter is a planet, - each city on that planet is a Bible verse.
You are a space traveller and you can make money by moving people from one sector to the next (ie - Move Bathsheba from 2 Samuel Sector, Planet 3, City 11, to somewhere else (so David doesn't get tempted ha ha ha))
There is so much potential - you can be a detective that follows a Bible study from one planet to the next. etc etc etc.

Anyway, that might help you if you ever wanted to go in that tangent.

Good Luck Krylar

HA! I love it! That's a really cool idea. You're right that the possibilities are pretty much endless.

Keep us posted on how it goes

Krylar.

If we wanted to create a game together in the forum - we need to start somewhere, just to see how it would work.

How would you do it?

Would you use the forum?
Would you use a separate website?

Once we figure out the best way to do this over the internet, then we can start on bigger projects.

Lead the way Kryler - if this is going to work, you need to be part of this.

I just created a new thread for that, Relevator...it's called "Game Projects"...check it out.

So does anyone have any additional ideas for this world creator thingy?

Thanks!
