What's the point of fasting? Is it a test or something?
I can't make the connection between skipping breakfast and arriving at Heaven.

Fasting doesn't have anything to do with salvation. If you can't understand salvation then you won't understand fasting either. It'd almost be like trying to tell a blind person how the color blue looks.

It helps to focus on the spiritual side of things, plus it has some symbolic value.

What's the point of it, if it won't even get you or anyone else to Heaven?
I'm assuming that Getting-to-Heaven is one of your major goals, and I don't see how skipping the pop tarts will make you any more spiritual either.

Fasting won't get anyone into heaven, and "skipping the pop tarts" won't make anyone more spiritual either. I believe that it should be done with the attitude that you are submitted to God and that you want to draw closer to Him. When I fast, I also pray and study the Bible. God is concerned about the attitude of your heart.

I get the reading/praying/drawing closer to and submitting to God, but what's so special about not eating?

Tip to shut me up:
Say it's tradition, quote a part of the Bible concerning fasting, and post like 19 links to Christian websites.

No. It isn't tradition, it is a princible to be followed to help one to draw closer to the LORD. Tradition is more like doing something simply because the previous generation did it. I do it because Jesus taught it, and because Jesus did it.

But but but how does it draw one closer to God? I understand communicating with Him and reading the Bible, but fasting?

It's not the physical act of not eating. That's not what's important, what it comes down to is the attitude of your heart. What are your motives? Why are you doing this?

The attitude of the 'heart' is important and all, but surely it could be put to better uses than restraining yourself from eating.

Which reminds me, do you prefer these Limited Edition 'Big Cup' Reese cups better than the old-school ones? Cause I thought the industry of chocolate engineering had reached perfection with the Reese Peanut Butter Cup, but I'm eating one of these new ones right now, and it's like off the charts of taste bud pwnage. Warm diet cola kinda kills the fun though.

Have you ever wanted to get away, isolate yourself, so you can focus on something in particular? That is sorta the idea behind fasting.

Fasting also has health benefits, as odd as that sounds. I should clarify that fasting is not necessarily starvation - as it appears some people think. Fasting can involve something other than food, but food is what most people associate with fasting because of tradition - and because of Jesus' forty days and nights in the wilderness.
Anyway, the health benefits to proper fasting include cleaning out the body and strengthening the immune system - but you have to really be of adequate health to fast for an extended period of time. Check out this article on fasting to get an idea of what to do and what not to do (strongly recommended reading if you intend to fast):

It wouldn't hurt to talk with your doctor and get some more information before you just do it. Anyway, I hope this helps those interested.

also fasting is a way of denying your flesh. our flesh/carnal side is sinful by nature. which is also our first birth. then being "born again" is a second birth, a spirtual birth. as Christians we struggle with our sinful nature. fasting is a way of denying the flesh, (in my opinion) it's giving your flesh no room to hinder you spiritually. i personally wouldn't check with a doctor before fasting, but of course i usually don't fast but like one day, and i drink water when i fast. of course, i could end up like peter or paul(i can't remember), and pass out from the lack of strength
