Recently I was told this prayer that has helped a good friend of mine and I would like to share it with others.

It's very simple and can be used either for yourself or for other people. Just say it whenever you want :-

Lord Jesus Christ.
Son of the Living God.
Bestow upon me your blessing.
And forgive me my sin.

God Bless

Well its nice to see someone new here. I have a qustion thow why that for your first post? It seems odd to me.

This also brings up another subject that this remindes me of. Anyone here ever been given a paper hankerchif with olive oil on it and been told it is to be kept or put under your bed? I was given one a long time ago and it was from some profet. The thing was to bring blessings or something. I was wandering if anyone else found this to be pointliss?

Anyways welcome to the new comer and I hope you get to answer my qustion about your post.

Welcome Iain. I'm looking forward to getting to know you better. In order for you to get to know the people here a bit better, I suggest you take a good look through the past threads.

And no, I've never been given a paper hankerchief with olive oil on it. That sounds weird and very hokey, but I suppose it's possible that it could be of God. I just don't know.

hankicheif huh

well didn't somepeople hand around peters hankicheif and people get healed (as well as with his shadow being cast on them)

God can use lots of things, he often does some things symbolic for our human purposes , since sometimes seeing something in the real world helps us focus our faith.. (because faith is in the things unseen)..

I.e our wedding ring is just a symbol of marriage , marriage is much more than just a ring.. but it helps us remember it..

many people keep something that reminds them of an important moment in their life (salvation, or a christian experience) or a God given direction/vision etc.. to keep them focused

however its very easy to take the focus off the thing a symbol represents and onto the symbol itself... the hankicheif never would have healing power, if you seek it for that, its thus turned into an idol..
and superstition is fulled of suchlike things..

as far as that prayer
the words are good.. however we don't have magic formulas to manipulate God into moving in our agenda, and our way of blessing
the best way God can bless a person is to put him in challenging situatiosn that he has to rely of God and submit to Him and spend time with HIm to get through..
be careful when you ask for God's blessing..
beause you might just get it , and if you just wanted to get out of God, then it mightn't be what you want.. but if God is your desire, then its sussed..

Hi all - I'm back online, in mid-holiday. Also got a new job - I start a week after I get back. I am the first person to be hired by this company who does not have a degree, so praise the Lord...

Anyhow, I wasn't sure if the olive oil guy was serious, but it sounds pretty whacko to me - I'd put it in the category of having no idols, personally. God certainly doesn't need oil, or a hanky, to bless anyone.

As for the prayer posted, the issue with any rote prayer is that it will be said by rote, just as the Apostles Prayer ( the prayer Jesus gave the Apostles as a model of what to pray for ) is mindlessly incanted throughout the religious world. But there is only good is what it says ( I could nit pick on a better model being 'lead me not into temptation', i.e. keep me from sin instead of a model that presumes I have sinned, but that would be pedantic ), and so if it is said from the heart, and the words considered and meant, then it can do no harm.

Personally I prefer to pray based on what I am feeling, not based on any formula, and of course to pray in the Spirit also.

Iaind: Welcome aboard!

Nope, never heard of that one. But here's a doozy for you. The person next door to us was selling their house. The real estate agent was told they needed to sell quickly. So the real estate agent showed up late at night and buried--get this--the "Saint of Moving" porcelain figure in the front yard. It didn't work. Actually, the house still hasn't sold and it's been about 6 months. Maybe she buried the "Saint of You Ain't Goin' Nowhere!" by accident.

MMIO: Congrats on the new job

Ummm, that prayer thing...
You can say anything, but it's your heart that matters.
I mean, God knows.
That prayer looks fine, but God's no Genie.
We don't use God, he uses us.
That doesn't mean he doesn't love/help/bless/(fill in the blank) us.

A napkin covered in olive oil!
I think that would attract bugs in my house.
That wouldn't be really a blessing.
Besides, It might stain my mattress.

yeah - well, going through a bad time at the moment with things and this prayer was told to me by a good friend - I said it a couple of times and a little ray of light (sic) came into my unhappy world.

In all seriousness, I know that God works in a very strange way sometimes and often it is not till later that we are aware of what He is doing, but in this instance it struck me right away that here was something that might be helpful to me at the moment. I didn't ask my friend if he 'had any prayers that might help'. It just really came up in the conversation. But, as I say, it struck me right away that this was God giving me a message (?)

ArchAngel - yeah I know God uses us - I'm all for that - and I wasn't suggesting for 1 second that I was using him. But, like a lot of people, I tend to REALLY talk to God when I am in trouble/hurt/angry/confused etc and not when things are going well - V Bad Habit - must break, and this wee short prayer can be said anywhere, anytime, anyplace. To me, it merely reinforces the commitment and request we make to Jesus to remove our sin when we commit our lives to Him.

Klumsy - you bet I'm in a challenging position right now (AGAIN!) I really only came to God properly last October at a church in Bradford, England (www.alm.org.uk) so I'm still sussing this whole thing out. Do I want God's blessing - you bet I do.

MeanManInOz - apparently this prayer orginated as a chant by some monks in the Medieval ages - similar to the Hare Krishna stuff - and it was designed to take them to that 'higher plain'. I don't use it as a chant, in most cases as the start or end of my prayers.

To All - thanks for making me welcome.

God Bless
