Hello All!

I've just written a script that you may feel free to use. Its a CCN New Post notifier. It shows the most recent CCN posts (like the front page), refreshes itself every minute and then beeps if it finds a change.

Here is the link to it.

God Bless!

Wow!

Great job, Sam! Just the thing I need to feed my addiction.

*beep*

Edit PS: Ooooh -- it just beeped for my reply to you. It's a very pleasant beep -- I think I like this tool.

At least it curbs the obsession to endlessly check for a new message only to find none there yet.. not that I do that.

Just fixed a bug if CCN takes too long to respond the script could time out and not refresh.

Sam,

Has your site been defaced, or is your homepage supposed to say what it says?

Never Forget to Pray!

"...prayer itself is an art which only the Holy Ghost can teach us. He is the giver of all prayer. Pray for prayer---pray till you can pray; pray to be helped to pray, and give not up praying because you cannot pray, for it is when you think you cannot pray that you are most praying. Sometimes when you have no sort of comfort in your supplications, it is then that your heart---all broken and cast down---is really wrestling and truly prevailing with the Most High."

You mean tgj.us? Thats a very old domain I used to have ages ago... actually to see my real website you've got to throw in the www's, but even that site is super old! That was last updated on our one year anniversary. We're coming up on our fourth.

lol sure. Its just a webpage, so no installation required, just click the link.

My webhost scans the ccn homepage and takes a sha1 hash of it storing in a session variable. There is a meta refresh tag that reloads the web page every 60 secs which compares the new hash with the stored one. It beeps (plays an mp3 as a BGSOUND tag) if they are different.

Its quite safe.. all html.

God Bless!

note to people who use the notifier and gmail (at least with firefox), if there is an update it seems to hijack your cursor in the embedded google chat. just click on the tab with the notifier to clear it up but it caught me off guard at first. could be just me though...

Nice job! Thanks! I was having the refresh timeout problem for a bit. Thanks for fixing it already.

This might be neat to see the code in the Showcase area.

mind if I try it too =]

[EDIT]
hmm weird I didn't hear anything (not this time or when I made my other posts) I can see the title in the bar changing though (I have stuff with sound running right now, so no sound issues on my machine )

[EDIT#2]
Actually visual indicator only works best for me, nice stuff!
(when I switched to that tab few moments ago I noticed a 'missing plugin' message. I chose to install it but nothing happened, as I said though no sound works best for me)

Hmm. No sound in Konqueror and the FF wants to download a plugin. Oh well, no sound for me (I don't use and don't want to have to use FF for just this page) just the really handy updating page.

Yeah, for me it actually opens gxine. Stupid for them to call it a gxine "browser plugin" when all it does is open the app.

Thanks for the comments everyone. I've rewritten the non-IE section to use a flash swf. Does this help the problem with gmail interruptions and linux guys? I believe linux has a flash plugin for the browsers right?

Please let me know back, Thanks!

I wonder if you'd want to create a separate page that always "dings" on reload just so that people can test their browsers ? (or perhaps just if they pass a "?ding=1" at the end of the URL or something)

Edit: BTW, from this new post, I can tell you that the new beep works great on FF for Windows

Is there a way to flash the title bar in case I have sound turned off? (similar to how Gmail flashes on a new incoming chat)

Looks like it might be able to be done with something like:

<script>
document.title="1";
setInterval('window.focus()',1000);
</script>

I don't think you can do that with a browser window.. but you can look down and see if the title has changed. If anyone knows if its possible to do this, i'll be happy to implement it.

No, it auto-refreshes and changes the title still. You can look at it and know that something has changed, whereas normally you would compulsively f5 the home page or something...

I mean... not me or anything.

feature request:

- different beep options: this is more about volume than different sounds but it could work both ways. I find that if I'm listening to music the beep is a good level but when I'm not or on the phone, the beep is too much for me. Just a thought
