Hello All! I've just written a script that you may feel free to use. Its a CCN New Post notifier. It shows the most recent CCN posts (like the front page), refreshes itself every minute and then beeps if it finds a change. God Bless! ------------------ |

Wow! Great job, Sam! Just the thing I need to feed my addiction. *beep* Edit PS: Ooooh -- it just beeped for my reply to you. It's a very pleasant beep -- I think I like this tool. [This message has been edited by HanClinto (edited August 24, 2007).] |

There is a meta refresh tag that reloads the web page every 60 secs which compares the new hash with the stored one. It beeps (plays an mp3 as a BGSOUND tag) if they are different. Its quite safe.. all html. God Bless! ------------------ |

note to people who use the notifier and gmail (at least with firefox), if there is an update it seems to hijack your cursor in the embedded google chat. just click on the tab with the notifier to clear it up but it caught me off guard at first. could be just me though... ------------------ |

Nice job! Thanks! I was having the refresh timeout problem for a bit. Thanks for fixing it already. This might be neat to see the code in the Showcase area. |

Hmm. No sound in Konqueror and the FF wants to download a plugin. Oh well, no sound for me (I don't use and don't want to have to use FF for just this page) just the really handy updating page. ------------------ "Oh, bother," said the Borg. Yeah, for me it actually opens gxine. Stupid for them to call it a gxine "browser plugin" when all it does is open the app. ------------------ |

Thanks for the comments everyone. I've rewritten the non-IE section to use a flash swf. Does this help the problem with gmail interruptions and linux guys? I believe linux has a flash plugin for the browsers right? Please let me know back, Thanks! Sam ------------------ |

I wonder if you'd want to create a separate page that always "dings" on reload just so that people can test their browsers ? (or perhaps just if they pass a "?ding=1" at the end of the URL or something) Edit: BTW, from this new post, I can tell you that the new beep works great on FF for Windows [This message has been edited by HanClinto (edited August 24, 2007).] |

Is there a way to flash the title bar in case I have sound turned off? (similar to how Gmail flashes on a new incoming chat) Looks like it might be able to be done with something like:

I don't think you can do that with a browser window.. but you can look down and see if the title has changed. If anyone knows if its possible to do this, i'll be happy to implement it. ------------------ |

I believe its possible, at least in firefox. When using gmail's chat thing, the gmail tab flashes when I have a new message. ------------------ |

doesn't the silent/no flash thing defeat the purpose? ------------------ "trust in the lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding, in all your way's, acknowledge him and he will direct your path" proverbs 3:5-6 |

Well you can still see the name in the title change even if silent and no flash. ------------------ |
|
crazyishone![]() Member Posts: 1685 From: Registered: 08-25-2004 |
No, it auto-refreshes and changes the title still. You can look at it and know that something has changed, whereas normally you would compulsively f5 the home page or something... I mean... not me or anything. ------------------ |

oh, I see! ...and I didn't compulsively F5 the home page, I thoughtfully refreshed it. ------------------ "trust in the lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding, in all your way's, acknowledge him and he will direct your path" proverbs 3:5-6 [This message has been edited by evdude (edited August 24, 2007).] |

feature request: - different beep options: this is more about volume than different sounds but it could work both ways. I find that if I'm listening to music the beep is a good level but when I'm not or on the phone, the beep is too much for me. Just a thought |
