That's where we hang out... but there's not too much activity right now.

don't feel dumb -- IRC may be older than you are, but I know plenty of people who work in the computer industry who don't know about IRC or how to use it.

IRC stands for Internet Relay Chat, and is still one of the most popular way for people to have chatrooms where lots of anonymous people can join and talk about topics.

One definitely needs to be wary of the chat networks though. It's generally not a good idea to go to random channels on those networks, because it's not hard to find people pirating warez software or other things. It's just like the Internet -- be wary when browsing sites you're not familiar with.

I'm on the CCN chat room about half of the week -- the other people who hang out there are Jari, Guategeek, CPUFreak, and sometimes other people like Lava, Riflefire or Ereon.

Cheers!

Sorry, I should have backed up a little bit.

IRC is its own protocol, just like HTTP (Hyper Text Transfer Protocol), FTP (File Transfer Protocol), or SMTP (Simple Mail Transfer Protocol). So a link to an IRC server actually looks like:
irc://irc.freenode.net

However, Firefox and IE don't understand the IRC protocol, so you need something like mIRC or Chatzilla (a great Firefox extension) to connect to the IRC server.

Cheers!

The FireFox extensions are a great thing. Saves you from installing a million other programs. And I hate to have a million programs installed on my computer. I've already replaced few apps with firefox extensions (i.e. FTP app with FireFTP extension). Looks like I can get rid of mIRC now =]

The welcome message could be removed from the chatzone channel because it just opens new window everytime when I login using gaim as a client.
