Actually it's very easy to write a Linux virus. To wipe the whole hard drive create a bash script and in it type: rm -rf /
But unless your root and stupid, and youd don't open the file, read it, delete it... you can make the virus work. HTe only way to really hurt the system with a virus is running it as root (super/admin user)

Yep. There's nothing they can do either. It's the stupidity of the linux user who will enable viruses to work. Go here:

Have you seen the Linux Virus howto's? One of them is how to write a virus and then how to protect yourself from it and other security features. It's very educational and interesting, even if you don't use linux. (hey questleader: the /bin and /usr/bin folders are like the WINDOWS and Program Files folders on windows...)

What does that l33+ speak mean?

That is possible... just test for a mouse click!

*ponders the idea...*

There used to be a windows virus that every time you did a system function it would have a ambulance with blaring sirens drive accros the screen. It was so "cool" I never uninfected the files.

no wait, but i know!

a virus that creates an annoying little smiley that travels you everywehre you go, interacting with the enviorment around him, such as when your on your desktop he starts opening files and such and comenting on them. such as "Ryan's love notes? OHOHOHHOO! whats this?" or on the internet he clicks on links and crap (thats going a bit far, but i don't care) Now however, is the probelm of displaying the simiely images and his positon on your computer and not a confined screen.

of course, im sure this is only a result of my ignorance and there's and easy explination for all of this that one of you could give me (I just want to make a little "Computer personality" to make a little friend for me. it would lighten up my day.)

see, its a virus because its annoying, oppening all your files on your desktop and such when your trying to do something, but its just fun to have a round, it has a certian personality to it that either grows on you, or you wup out a can of Anti-virus kick butt! its kinda like having your little
brother on your comptuer! They should make good compainons too. Every one remember that post about the online-chat bot? it was a while, but teh chatbot LEARNED more about everybody, and gained an attitude. its your own little vertual friend, who learns more about you from your ractions.

(they also send embarrasing photos or .txt documents to your friends to tick you off! !)

well, i think your idea is pretty cool realm.

i like how you said it would be like having your little bro on your computer.
it obviously inst a "virus" in the traditional sense...

either way, unless its to test security, only crackers and people up to good write viruses. I currently have one called FURootkit on my computer...and im really bugged by that. This is all AIM's fault. stupid secutiry holes.
the fact that there is a rootkit on my computer reeealy irks me..but i dont really feel like running my virus scan...it takes so long. I'll run it while im at school 2morrow. itll be done by half way thru first period. haha.

Actually a number of computer scientists have pondered the question "Can you make a beneficial virus?". A textbook example compressed the executable it infected so it took up less space.

Unfortunately:
1) The virus itself took up space, so many files ended up bigger.
2) It ended up on computers whos admins had not agreed to it.
3) It didn't do anything a regular program couldn't do. A regular compression program would have only 1 copy of itself on the computer so it would be smaller too.

All 'beneficial' viruses end up like this. It is not worth trying.

Nah, use GAIM. It's open source and more secure. If you don't have GTK, download the one that doesn't need GTK.

i like trillian. if i'm not mistaken it's a got an encrypted chat thing(haven't messed with it)...that and i can have one program running all the instant messenger services, which means less resources are being used.

beneficial virus...how about having a virus that scanned for spyware and removed it...or defragged your hardive periodically? for those people who never do either and wonder "why is my computer so slow?"

2) It ended up on computers whos admins had not agreed to it.

Also, what hapens if they have a specific reason? Also, it would take up RAM and harddrive space. IT would cause it to be SLOWER!

Juts make a program that allows them to run it. jeez.

i know...i'm just throwing ideas out there...i suppose you could make something that ran as "silent" as a virus, but the user had to install it, and could still configure it to do what they want when they want. the less graphics the less ram being took up. they should have an option on norton and ad-aware to scan/clean before shut down, then display the results the next time you boot. that way you could start windows shutdown then go to sleep or do something. then get the results next time you boot.

Yes. But that wouldn't be defined as a "virus" which is what this topic is about.
