Just thought I'd share this widescreen public domain fractal desktop that I made. I call it: IceWeasel

It was really simple to make. All I had to do was pick a few cool looking fractal images, colourize them, and shrink, rotate or move them around till I got something that looked nice.

Here are the instructions to make them in Gimp:
Create a blank transparent image. Click on the image window and then on the Filers menu. From there go to Render > Nature > Flame. You can adjust the zoom, and offset of the fractal if you like, but that can wait until after you create a fractal that suits your taste. Click on Edit, then on Randomize and choose a fractal. Finally click OK and if you have a slow system... come back after you've poured a cup of coffee.

To colourize the fractal click on the Layer menu and then Colours > Colour Balance and adjust the colours.

I'd like to see the fractal images of those who have time to make and post a few.

I'm pretty picky with my desktops and I gotta say... this has some artistic appeal. I'll probably use it in the near future.

Wow! That's very tempting. Thanks for providing the steps in the GIMP. I may try that out.

I like to use my own photographs for backgrounds, though. But it'd still be fun to try it out for myself. I have a really slow system, so it may be more like MAKE some coffee.

I used to make 1280x1024 fractals on a 1.58Ghz system with 512MB ram. One like this would take about 4-7 minutes.

Yep. 1.8 GHz 512MB. This is why I have wanted a new computer. Photo manipulations take a really long time. Most photos I do some simple editing. I rarely go into something fancy, but when I do, it's sloooooow.

I don't usually use anything but a plain color for my desktop wallpaper because of memory usage... but the urge to have my desktop look the same as mastallama's was too great to resist.

Fractals are interesting... think I'll work on a few.

Hmm...

here's one:

And here's another:

And here's a third.

I was working on a fourth when Gimp crashed. *mutters under his breath*
Just shows how reliable this darn open source junk is... (j/k)

Not bad. I like 'em. haha, for a certain period of time I really liked making fractal backgrounds with gimp.

I would post one, but that would be like hijacking the thread.

The thread's already resurrected -- I don't see any reason why you shouldn't go ahead and post your own fractals.

BTW, I don't think I've welcomed you to CCN yet. Welcome to CCN!

Did I bump an old topic? I'll try not to do that very often.

I'll find one then.

Not too old -- just two months.

I don't mind the occasional one (especially if it's directly relevant to the original discussion), but I think you're on the right track -- keeping it to a minimum is a good idea.

Nice to have you with us here on the boards.

All that I have on my imageshack account right now is one I made into an album art... It'll do, though.

Thanks! No other one I made turned out quite like that, though...

EDIT: Dug up a couple more.

Just a little wallpaper thingy.

this one ChickenSoup of ccgr made for me, which I also used as an album art. Kind of him, and it turned out swell.

I actually took a fractal I made using this method and edited in GIMP and entered it in my college art show. I don't think any of the offical instructors were actually able to think of it as real "art" but alot of the other students were impessed and everyone who saw it seemed to like it. Noone bought it though. I printed a limited edition of five and so far I've only sold one, and that was to my grandparents .

Feel free to use the one of mine that isn't an album art in any way you like, but I think my album arts probably shouldn't be modified in case of a commercial release... Gotta be thinking ahead here.

It's amazing what you guys can do in a 2D drawing program. I'm using them myself from time to time but I never thought you can go that far.
