does anyone know a way to set up xp or 2000 pro as a dhcp server for free? i just have a small home network, so i'm not looking to get 2000 server, and i don't have a free box to set up linux on right now, and dual booting linux on one of the boxes would kind of defeat the purpose, any help would be appreciated.

Very very easy. I'm pretty sure you need to give yourself a manual IP of 192.168.0.1

Then set all the other computers to automatically get their IPs

thanks. i'm wanting it to be set up as a dhcp server so when i host a lan party all the other computers get their ip address and i don't have to worry about duplicate addresses. which i doubt would happen anyway, but i guess i just really want to set up a dhcp server without having to install linux or reinstall 2000 server.

Does that autoassign trick really work for Windows? I'll believe it when I see it.

Benny:
I recommend either having a real DHCP server (at our LAN parties, we have a wireless router that we have DHCP enabled on), or manually assigning IP's to everyone's computer when they come in. We've done it both ways at our parties -- one nice thing about manually setting each IP is that it's a good opportunity to check their computers and make sure they've got a virus scanner running (such as AVG free), and the latest patches for the game that you're going to be playing (we play Unreal Tournament usually).

Cheers! I hope your party goes well! I'm interested in hearing about how it goes.

Eww. Don't play FarCry with DHCP or you'll get a headache. Most multiplayer games work better with the server having a Static IP.

DCHP is DHCP whether it's on windows, mac, linux, amiga, UNIX, Unununium, *BSD... anything. I don't know how DHCP works.. but I'll learn soon. I'm studying to get a A+ Certification soon.

Same on computers... it doesn't matter but if you do have a DHCP enabled router.. use it. The server must have a static IP though.

I'd highly suggest that. Start with 192.168.0.1 and count upwards as more computers are added.

I usually play Counter Strike 1 on linux with a DCHP assigned IP as I never host. ...

Same here.

thanks for the help. i can handle the static ip on the server, i just don't have a spare router/firewall to connect to my hub just to have a dhcp server. does anyone know if smoothwall has a built-in dhcp server? guess i could look that up myself...hmmm...again thanks for the help, i'm going to go look up some info on smoothwall(all i need is 2 network cards to build a firewall with it ).

must ...get...smoothwall...installed...*drools*(not really) ...it's free, and i can have a dhcp server, web proxy server, firewall...and a few more things all running on an old 200mhz pentium mmx machine with like a couple hundred mb hard drive! it's when i read about stuff like this i remember why i'm going into the networking field...i think it's like klumsy when he sees the potential in a new programming lanugage/environment/whatever the programming world offers(i'm no coder)...i think setting up smoothwall is going to be my next project, all i need is $10-$30 to get a couple used nics off of ebay and i'm on my way...anyway...sorry for my overly enthusiastic post...

Oh, Han, I'm sitting behind a NAT with a DHCP assigned IP. The "server" is a Toshiba laptop running Windows XP. Works fine.
