ok. me and my friend networked our computers together to play freelancer, and dungeon siege together(and waste the majority of our lives). but the only way we can get the network to work is to re-setup the network, and restart and log in to our computers at the same time. i've also had this same problem with my parents computers and mine. me and my friend changed my network card, and he bought a hub, so all the hardware has changed, and still the same problem. oh, and we are both running xp home sp1a. any help would be appreciated.

hmmm... networking. lemme see. Just networked my friends comp to mine (both xps) and I have networked with other friends, and stuff. hmm... Windows is strange, ya know. I'm not too sure what I did get networking to work. some cases you have to get the IP address the same, but not always. um... try getting into the same workgroup. mostly, play around with the connection set ups. and don't do anything stupid. lol

It sounds like you are familiar with networking basics. I would suggest reviewing every step you took in case you might have missed something simple. Sometimes it is the most obvious and basic things that cause things to not work properly. If all else fails, give the websites below a look-over. Be sure you read everything before taking action. Each of these sites has their own personal tips and recommendations, so consider those which make sense to you. If you are unsure about something, research it further; some of these guides are older and may not reflect any changes in the latest OS patch.

yeah i know the basics of networking, and a little bit more, but i'm nowhere near administrator level. thanks for the help people. my friend hasn't been up for a while, and i haven't been at his house so i can't try anything out right now. i'm thinking maybe i should find my trial copy to windows 2000 server, or 2003 server and just set up a dns server...i think that's the one anyway. just configure it all by ip addresses and call my domain kassinger.biz or something. anywho...GOD bless y'all.

Hey man i got XP Home and i got my puteres networked with just ethernet....run network setup on the host puter and type in your ip addy ie:192.168.0.0 or whatever 255.255.255.255 or whatver also then remember what your workgroup is for the host. then run network setup on all clients and have them use same workgroup and if your internet charing then set them to "obtain ip addy automaticly" if not try it with giving them ip's lemme know if this works for you....

i think we fixed the problem, it was on his computer. we went and installed ad-aware on his computer and ran it, then the networked started running with no problem whatsoever. spyware stinks!
