what do you think... is it okay for Christians for play Unreal Tournament (2003, and 2004)? Is it quenching the Holy Spirit in us by playing games like UT, is it sin??? Please tell I'm a big UT fan and I love the game I have been playing UT for a long time now (even before I was a christian). thankx |

I think it's perfectly fine, as long as you realize the violence in these games is totally unrelated to real world violence. That is, after killing bots in UT, you feel like punching some kid. see.. if that's the case, then you shouldn't play. lol ------------------ |

It's always good to consider these things, rather than becoming complacent, so, good for you. As for UT2004, interestingly, I've just been commissioned by a publisher to write a strategy guide for it. |

quote: personally,my view is remember the difference between fantasy and reality---no game is morally dangerous unless you are willing to accept it as a reality over God, in which case if you are doing that it isn't the games fault.......but anyways kinda interesting that you are writing a guide for UT2004 Jas-----------question tho-----how would you put a walkthrough in it? I don't have the game, but I have UTchampionship for Xbox and that game is pretty much multiplayer only (I think UTC is just a console version for UT2003---but not sure)----so what would be in a UT strategy guide? like items? Also, who is publishing it I will look for it! Is it BradyGames?--I mostly see their guides and some brand that begins with a P (cannot remember now)------but tell us more so we can look for it anyways!!!!!! congrats btw that is pretty cool! ------------------ |

what do you think about killing women in UT? I know that in UT2004, one of the loading screens shows two women dressed in military outfit holding guns. Isn't that kind of distrubing? |

I have to weigh in and say that you must make sure games don't become idols to you. I played away about 3 summers with games (Tribes 1, Tactical Ops, Counter-Strike) and I can safely say that was sinful. It was a big idol in my life. |

yeah. I'd agree with Bkewl. and. no person was killed in the making, or playing, of UT2004. ------------------ |

So... having an extra hard drive on your computer just for UT games wouldn't make it an idol right? What does scripture then mean when it says to avoid all appearance of evil? aren't violent video games evil? |

A test for you: In order to make the issue clear to you - and only to you - provide for equal opportunity with the things of God and the things you enjoy the most. God bless, ( if anyone else benefits from this exercise and wants to let me know, email me at _matt_at_cgdc_dot_org_ ) |

quote: no lol-------just as much as having a crucifix on your necklace isn't an idol--as far as the bible drive thing---------what about time you spend with a non-electronic bible? I would not use my PS2 for bibical stuff just as much as I would not try to put and Unreal Tournament disc in a bible and expect it to run----that idea is only reflective of computer usage and not your whole life (ok I know some ppl spend their whole life in front of a PC but whatever) ------------------ |

Like I said, that idea was for pillar. One step at a time. Zoo - I sent you a PM. |

As Christians we can look out for others as well as ourselves. Besides the question of "does this cause me to sin" there is also "is this a sinful thing" and "does it cause others to sin." The first question is what others have addressed, so I'll leave that and bring up the other two. I've never played UT so I can't say specifically, but in general for any game or other type of thing, just ask yourself, as if you were completely unbiased and disinterested, whether this game is mostly affecting people for better or for worse. What values does it promote, what mindsets or behaviors will it encourage or not, and is it a good way to spend time? If it would tend to have a bad effect on others (more than a reasonable fringe) then if you're financially or otherwise supporting it, that makes you a contributor to the problem. And of course, when considering the effect it will have on others or on yourself, remember we tend to be biased and rationalize because of our invested interests and incentives. So double-check your your conclusions, whatever they are. If you were looking from the viewpoint of a committee on ethics, or a victim of some sort, or perhaps a spiritual viewpoint (such as God's point of view or an angel) would you have the same conclusions? That's in general, specifics for this one I have a good excuse not to comment! |

Thanks for all the input, I decided that UT wasn't good for me anyway so I stopped playing it. I was spending about two hours a day on that thing and it was affecting my spiritual life. |

um, in that case, I would suggest a break. ------------------ |

quote: Well, you can do walkthrus for multiplayer games, but they're more about learning the levels, showing good spots to drop in on other players, pointing out the secrets and weapon locations. You can also plot 'kill-paths' for people so they have a generic plan to follow. They also are intended to be enjoyable so there's a bit of history about the game's series, plus sections on where to find online resources, the best custom built maps and other stuff. |

i've spent a lot more than 2 hours a day on a couple of games before, but i don't have them anymore, i only play them when my friend is up. i'm weird i guess. i don't mine playing the game, but i do mine owning it, mainly because i'm the kind of person who get's "lost" in a game, for hours upon hours. you did the right thing by not playing it anymore. ------------------ |
