Argh! I hardly know what to ask. I've been reading some faqs at register.com, but I'm a little confused. All this talk of registrars, registrants, DNS servers, MX records, etc - yikes!

What I have:

- some webspace in a subdirectory at www.tegart.com. I do not own or control tegart.com, but they've given me http://www.tegart.com/software for my site and a tegart.com email address.

What I want:

- I want to register tegarttech.com and have it point(?) to my subdirectory on tegart.com, so when people go to tegarttech.com they get my website, and it looks like a stand-alone domain/website (ie. no reference to tegart.com, even though behind the scenes it's a subdir of tegart.com)
- a few tegarttech.com forwarding email addresses that are forwarded to my actual email address.

Where do I begin, and how do I set this up?

Brian

Hi Briant.

I registered www.revelatorgames.com at http://www.directnic.com/
They do free domain redirection and allow you to have some email addresses with the domain name you registered. I think it still is on ly US$15 a year.

That may be your solution.

Hi Revelator,

Thanks, I'll look at them.

But something I still don't understand - after I pay my $15 and secure the name, how do I get it connected to my web pages?

When you have your directNIC account, Go to that page.

Go to the Domain Manager Page

Click on the "house" icon which is "Changing Hosting Information"

Click the link "Change Hosting Type"

Click the "Redirected" box, then scroll down and click the button "Change Hosting Type"

And this is where you enter in your URL, ie http://www.tegart.com/software

Then you should be right as rain.

Hope this helps

Hey Revelator,

Great! Thanks!

Some more questions: (sorry!)

What's to prevent someone from registering a domain name and then pointing it to someone else's site? Eg. Someone could register www.billgatesistheantichrist.com and point it at www.microsoft.com (I'm not suggesting anyone do this, btw).

In other words, is there any verification done that the pages you point to with your new domain are pages you actually own? Or does it even matter? Is there anything that needs to be set up on the webhost's side?

Lastly, I just curious: are you using directnic.com as a webhost also, or are you pointing your domain name to another host?

Thanks,
Brian

Hi Briant.

There is nothing stopping you from pointing your URL to someone elses address. You can point it to mine if you want because all it will do is generate more traffic for me (he he he).

No, I don't use DirectNIC as a web host. With my ISP, I get 10 free Megabites of webspace. That is what I use.

With any extra space I need, I just get one of the free webhosters to store my files for me. Because I am using Flash 3 to link to the other websites, they can't trace which website the link is coming from, and so they don't block me from accessing that file.

I set up a complete website on the free webhosters site, so it isn't unethical what I am doing.

ie, compare http://users.bigpond.com/makunz to http://discover.batcave.net

The batcave one has all the study guides, and bigpond accesses them all. But they are identical sites except because batcave is free, it has advertising. (which I don't want)

P.S, if you don't want to pay for a domain, get a free one. I got http://only.at/bible to point to my bigpond website. I think it's cool. And they only provide one pop-up advertisement for you to use it.

Go to http://www.rename.net to check out this free option.

Thanks, Revelator. I registered a domain name with directnic yesterday and it's already working and working great. In my search, I was told about www.hostsearch.com which is a great site: you just enter your requirements (space, traffic, price) and it tells you all the webhosting companies that meet your requirements. Between directnic and the cheap hosting you can find via hostsearch, it's really inexpensive to set up your own domain and site!
