my quote: I own a 22 caliber rifle with sight... brother does too...(no sight) dad has a shotgun, assault rifle, and two pistols... I like the pistols because they load up pretty quick... the 10mm gives a WWWAAAAYYYY bigger kick then the 22 caliber... ------------------ |

I have a 3 foot celtic sword and that's about it. I would like to expand on my 'collection' later on an include various types of sword, axes and maces. |

I started collecting swords, but I got tired of collecting sinky little flea market models, so now I'm waiting until I can afford to collect much better ones. I do, however have one hand-and-a-half sword (to use the polite term), and one handed longsword, two throwing axes (ones molded, one a hand made one given to me by a mentor of mine), and my baby, a 10 1/2 inch blackened blade throwing knife, coolest knife ever ![]() ------------------ Of course God knew what would happen if they used their freedom the wrong way: apparently He thought it worth the risk. awww, i really want to get some throwing knives. i think they might be illegal in canada now though ![]() @conan: is the dagger an actual dagger? or is it a main gauche? (a common weapon to wield with a rapier) @man in black: what model of assault rifle does your dad have? i'm guessing a civilian semi-auto AR-15? |

My brother has a sword. A real one (not sharp). ------------------ |

most swords that you buy, "real" or not are just mockups and essentially not real ![]() |

You're right. For a real sword that can actually cut things you will have to spend several hundred dollars at least. |

What is the definition of a real sword? ------------------ |
CheeseStorm Member Posts: 521 From: Registered: 11-28-2004 |
A big piece of steel that disassembles would-be burglars. |

A lot of it has to do with how well the blade holds an edge, and how well the sword stands up under abuse. Much of this has to do with tempering (heating it up and cooling it down at different rates/temperatures), how well the forging was done (I.E., good consistent welds, getting rid of internal cracks through heating and pounding, etc), how good the alloy is, how well the edge was layed on the sword (is it a forged edge or a ground edge, is there a consistent temper on the edge, etc) and then there are aesthetics after that such as balance and appearance. Because so much of what makes a real sword "real" is underneath the surface, so it's all to easy to just take a hunk of extruded steel, grind it, polish it, add a pretty handle, and sell it for $60 at a renaissance faire. This is about all I know, which as you can see, isn't much. I could talk more about metallurgy from a physics point of view, but I don't know that you would find a discussion on metal grain size very interesting, and I don't know how well I could remember much of what I learned those years ago. --clint |

I've always wanted to learn to forge swords... but swordsmithing is like the pinnacle of an art. To want to just jump in and learn to make a sword without long experience in blacksmithing is like wanting to jump into the an NFL game without ever having exercised (let alone played football). ------------------ |
